Fitzcarraldo starring Klaus Kinski. Another recent result of my Werner Herzog buying spree. A manic rubber baron in the Peruvian jungle has a massive, river steamboat towed and lifted over a mountaintop as part of his plan to build an opera house and lure Enrico Caruso to perform there.
During the Fitzcarraldo shoot, local indians offered to kill Kinski, Herzog said no, "I needed Kinski for a few more shots, so I turned them down. I have always regretted that I lost that opportunity."
Kinski wrote this about Herzog, "Herzog is a miserable, hateful, malevolent, avaricious, money-hungry, nasty, sadistic, treacherous, cowardly creep...he should be thrown alive to the crocodiles! An anaconda should strangle him slowly! A poisonous spider should sting him and paralyze his lungs! The most venomous serpent should bite him and make his brain explode! No panther claws should rip open his throat--that would be much too good for him! Huge red ants should piss into his lying eyes and gobble up his balls and his guts! He should catch the plague! Hate Crime starring Giancarlo Esposito, Seth Peterson and Bruce Davison. Suburban Dallas gay couple Robbie and Trey have a new neighbor harassing them. When Trey is murdered in the local park Robbie's neighbor has a tight alibi while police see Robbie as the main suspect.

Puss'n Cahoots by Rita Mae Brown. Brown always lists the cat's name as co-author, but I refuse to do so. Brown has a very loyal readership, this is the 16th book cat book she has. The books are supposed to be fun but, come on, I'm not reading a book about cats.
Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella. London fashion fanatic Becky is having a great life. She's married, working at London's newest clothing store, and has a new baby on the way. But when Becky discovers her obstetrician is her husband's ex-girlfriend she starts getting worried.
Requiem for a Dealer by Jo Bannister. Thrilling Detective said, "Brodie Farrell has the seemingly-obligatory 'cute' first name for a female detective and a growing rep for finding things and people. In fact, she's set out her shingle for her small business "Looking for Something?" in the small seaside town of Dimmock. But there's nothing cute about some of the harrowing violence and pain that Brodie often faces in the course of -- and the result of -- her investigations."

Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende. Ines Suarez was born into a poor family in 16th Century Spain. When her husband went missing in the New World, she took the chance to flee her homeland and search for him. After learning her husband died in battle, Ines began a love affair with the field marshal of Francisco Pizarro. Ines went on to conquer Chile and defend Santiago City against attack. Allende's novelization of Ines is supposed to be an excellent read. But you can listen to it, instead.
Red River by Lalita Tademy. The 1873 Colfax Riot in Louisiana left over 100 black Civil War veterans and local citizens dead after a clash against segregationists. Colfax was an important battle of the Reconstruction south. Tademy fictionalizes the story through the eyes of two families, one black and one white.
Hide by Lisa Gardner. Suspense writer Gardner has Bobby Dodge investigating a killer that he thought was dead.
Breakpoint by Richard A. Clarke. Terrorists aim to destroy international communications. Attacking internet cable centers, computer grids and space satellites brings the Intelligence Analysis Center into action. As the attacks increase, the Center investigates Russian mobsters, rogue nations, and right-wing militias before the damage is too great.

After a Library burglary Flynn has to recover the Spear of Destiny. A fun and goofy movie with 15 additional minutes not shown on the TNT network.

Twelve years later Dorrington tries again with a uniquely shaped balloon (shaped like a diamond) and brings Herzog along to document the expedition and uniquely film the spectacular scenery.

The Ringer starring Johnny Knoxville. Loser Steve Barker fakes his way into the Special Olympics to fix the track events and make some needed money.
Requiem for a Dream starring Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans and Jared Leto. A widowed mom, her son and her son's two friends all hit bottom after each one gets hooked on either diet pills, heroin or cocaine. Requiem has become something of a cult movie and is known for a realistic, and scary, look at drug addiction.
Pi directed by Darren Aronofsky. Mathematican Maximilian mulls stock market mysteries as he mistakenly trusts manipulative madmen and mislays his mind.

Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones by Robert Greenfield. Sex, drugs and rock and roll wasn't a cliche to the Rolling Stones. Greenfield tells the story of the Stones' self imposed exile in Southern France and the hedonistic parties that joined the band's recording of Exile on Main St. Highly recommended by comic Artie Lang.

Endless Wire by the Who. I mentioned this one before but the title was detained. Townsend and Daltrey's first studio album in several years. Includes a DVD of a 2005 Who performance in France.

New Fiction titles available
Our cataloging and processing is catching up with our new system. For several days after our "Go Live" date of January 10 we were not allowed to add any new items. Jim is working hard at cataloging the books, DVDs, and music CDs that we have had sitting around since our cataloging moratorium that started back in November.
Fiction
Magic Time by Doug Marlette. What is this? I don't recognize this at all. Oh, now I remember, this is supposed to be pretty good. In 1991, emotionally broken down newspaper columnist Carter Ransom returns to home to Mississippi for a rest. When evidence that a 1964 murder trial of a Klansman may have been fixed Carter gets involved because: 1) he's a newspaperman, and 2) his father was the trial's presiding judge in '64.
One Shining Moment by Gilbert Morris. The prolific Morris publishes another novel from his American Century series. The Stuart children live through World Wat One and into the Twenties.
Awake in the Dark by Shira Nayman. Short stories about the children of Holocaust survivors discovering family secrets. Author's career as a clinical psychologist gives a different tack to the stories. This could be a neat companion to Art Spiegelman's story about his Holocaust surviving father in Maus and Maus II.
Pictures by Robert Daley. Daley's 2005 novel Enemy of God has checked out pretty well. According to the book jacket this is a "sexy thriller with a harrowing climax". After photos of a European duchess's husband shacking up with another women hit the Euro gossip magazines Vincent Conte's security firm is hired to find the mistress and the photographer and find out who commissioned the photos to be taken. Conte travels across Europe for answers and finds his clients are using those answers for more than personal edification.
Keeper of the Keys by Perri O'Shaughnessy. Architect Ray Jackson's wife has disappeared. Leigh is gone with no note, no body, and no trace. When a friend of Leigh starts to question Ray's truthfulness, along with the police, Ray starts to investigate. Using years old keys from the homes his mother and he used to live in Ray digs into his violent past to find a connection to Leigh's disappearance. This is a standalone novel and not a part of the Nina Reilly series.
Eagle's Prophecy by Simon Scarrow. Scarrow starting writing novels of the Roman Legions when he could not find any he liked. Scarrow is a fan of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series and writes his novels as adventure stories filled with historical detail, nasty bad guys, and plenty of action. Eagle's Prohecy is set in 45 AD as series Legionaire heroes Macro and Cato are assigned to the Roman Fleet to help recover the Delphic scrolls from the pirates who stole them.
Large Print Fiction
Murder at the Opera by Margaret Truman. Same story, different verse by the daughter of Harry S. Georgetown law professor Mac Smith is onstage as an extra at the Kennedy Center National Opera when a promising singer is killed. Mac investigates on the invitation of the theater board and we have an interesting insight into the "backstage" of D.C. society.
Born in Death by J.D. Robb. What's the point of using a pseudonym when your real name, Nora Roberts, is spread atop the book's cover? Policewoman in 2060 investigates a double murder. Eve Dallas has to simultaneously search for a girl who has gone missing from her friends' birthing class.

Eagle's Prohecy is set in 45 AD as series Legionaire heroes Macro and Cato are assigned to the Roman Fleet to help recover the Delphic scrolls from the pirates who stole them.
Large Print Fiction
Murder at the Opera by Margaret Truman. Same story, different verse by the daughter of Harry S. Georgetown law professor Mac Smith is onstage as an extra at the Kennedy Center National Opera when a promising singer is killed. Mac investigates on the invitation of the theater board and we have an interesting insight into the "backstage" of D.C. society.
Born in Death by J.D. Robb. What's the point of using a pseudonym when your real name, Nora Roberts, is spread atop the book's cover? Policewoman in 2060 investigates a double murder. Eve Dallas has to simultaneously search for a girl who has gone missing from her friends' birthing class.

New Items trickling on to the shelves...
We have a cart full of "stuff" waiting to be processed, including CDs, DVDs, and books. A bunch of kids books were processed yesterday. But, since I list Adult items, you have to call Carolyn at 648-2166 to find out the latest new stuff in the kids section.

No Dominion by Charlie Huston. This is Huston's sixth novel and the second in his series that features Joe Pitt, a vampire private investigator in Manhattan. Pitt was bitten by the "Vyrus" in the 1970's and has been living in nighttime Manhattan ever since. Pitt walks the line between the different, quarreling vampire clans whose Manhattan territories are distinctly carved out.
Huston's vampires are not the sexualized, goth types who mope around in other novels. Huston is a noir mystery author who sticks a vampire society in the middle of straightforward, and well-written mysteries.

Here's the plot outline listed on IMDB, "A young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. New System is Up and Running
Our computer system conversion has been a success. There have been the usual "teething" problems that occur during a conversion process like this, but things have gone quite well. You can access our catalog through our webpage or link direct to the catalog page.
The conversion did not assign a number to any customers' accounts. Call the Library at 648-2166 to get a personal identification number (PIN) assigned to your Library account for online access.
All customer information should have transferred over during the conversion process. Give us a call if you spot a problem with your holds, check-outs, holds, etc.

Update: Computer Conversion Almost Complete
LD Fargo is converting from our old Dynix system to the new SIRSI system. Due to the conversion we are unable to checkout anything until 3.30 PM on January 10th. The Library staff and Library Board apologize for this delay in service.

Library News
The LD Fargo Public Library is happy to announce that we will be offering a new online public library catalog beginning January 10th, 2007. The new library catalog, SHARE, will be easier for customers to use and provides more services than our current system. Our current catalog, LAUNCH, shares the collections of libraries in Jefferson and Dodge counties. SHARE will add the counties of Washington, Walworth and Racine and let you use your Lake Mills Library Card at 44 different libraries. The SHARE system also enables you to make online requests for an item at any of those 44 libraries to be sent to the L.D. Fargo Library in Lake Mills for pick-up. Some of those libraries are: Watertown, Beaver Dam, West Bend, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Hartford, Lake Geneva, and Racine.

New Fiction
Devil's Only Friend by Mitchell Bartoy. Detroit, 1944. The manufacturing boom brought by the war brings prosperity for the automakers. But, for some people, things are not so good. Former police detective Pete Caudill is asked to investigate the murder of a young lady on the grounds of a Lloyd Motors auto plant. Caudill discovers a similar murder at a different Lloyd Motors plant and the ball starts to roll. The reviewer for Booklist wrote, "Detroit is dominated by big money, its corrupt toadies, and the pall cast over everyone by the war. Caudill is a flawed man, both physically and emotionally, but he's not ready to accept the moral morass into which his city has sunk and which its leaders justify with patriotism. This is a series to watch." LD Fargo Library also owns The Devil's Own Rag Doll from 2005.

New DVDs (and some I forgot about)
Little Fish. Starring Cate Blanchett, Sam Neil and Hugo Weaving. Former heroin junkie Tracy has spent four years clean, is mending her family relationships, and starting a business. Tracy tries to stay straight when three men from her past, including her brother and a former boyfriend, start dragging her back into the crime world.
Strange Brew. Starring Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas). Released in 1983. Bob and Doug stick a mouse in a beer bottle and visit the Elsinore brewery hoping to get free beer. The scheming brewmaster takes advantage of their stupidity to frame them for the owner's murder. The brewmaster is then free to set upon his plans to take over the world by releasing his mind control beer on Toronto's Oktoberfest. What a hoser.
The King. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal and William Hurt. Elvis leaves the Navy and heads to Texas to find his biological father, David, who he never met. David is now a successful Baptist pastor who wants his sinful past to stay hidden, and Elvis to do the same. After his rejection by David, Elvis befriends his half-sister Malerie and starts to make unwanted in-roads into David's life.
American Dreamz. Starring Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore. A comedic parody of American Idol with the president joining the popular show to improve his own ratings.
Edmond. Starring William H. Macy, Mena Suvari, Denise Richards, Julia Stiles, Bokeem Woodbine. A David Mamet story (which explains why Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pigeon also appear). Edmond uncharacteristically gets his fortune told and learns "he is not where he is supposed to be". After a fight with his wife, Edmond goes to bar, talks to a racist, and starts losing the self-control his life has had.
Beerfest. From the makers of Super Troopers and Club Dread. Beer guzzling brothers Todd and Jan travel to Germany during the heights of Oktoberfest to spread their grandfather's ashes. Stumbling across the secret Beerfest drinking competition they decide to enter as the American team to show their German relatives that they too can "swill beer and embarass themselves just as well as anyone".
Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgard, Bill Nighy. Something about pirates, sword fighting, ships, Keira Knightley, and some sort of octopus man.
Uno Bianca. Italian crime thriller. A team of detectives have been tracking and chasing a gang of armed robbers. When a resulting gunfight kills their officer, the cops take their methods and chase to the extreme. Based on a true story of crimes in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy in 1991.

Shadowboxer. Starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Helen Mirren. Mikey has been raised by assassin Rose as a killer, and as her lover. When Rose and Mikey are hired to kill a pregnant wife the cancer stricken Rose decides to go on the run with the girl and Mikey.

Imaginary Kingdom by Tim Finn. Native New Zealander Tim Finn and his brother Neil are best known through their bands Split Enz and Crowded House. They also did two albums together as the Finn Brothers. Here's part of the review for Imaginary at Allmusic "To say that this album is magical is an understatement! Imaginary Kingdom is an atmospheric and joyous collection of beautifully written songs that embrace the listener with warmth and emotional honesty. Piano moves back to centerstage again and Finn's vocals are a wonder to behold." If you'd like to read more gushing go to the fan forums at Frenz of the Enz.
Modern Times by Bob Dylan. You likely know who Dylan is. This is his latest album and is supposed to be above par, better than that slump he was in for several years back in the '80s.
Endless Wire by The Who. Half a Who released this new studio album in conjunction with their latest tour. Endless Wire has garnered good reviews and, since Townshend songs and Daltrey's voice are still there, the core of the Who plays on. Also includes a five song DVD from a July, '06 concert in France.
Folk-Pop
9 by Damien Rice. Irishman Rice's music provided part of the soundtrack for the film Closer and The Blower's Daughter is his most recognizable tune. This CD just narrowly missed a disastrous coffee spill, check it out from the Library before the next java attack.

Sing A Long: Crunchy Munchy Music by The Wiggles. I read that Yellow Shirt is leaving the band due to a chronic illness. Enjoy his last vocal appearance on this album by the Australian band. Incidentally, Tim Finn recorded an old Split Enz song, Six Months in a Leaky Boat, with the Wiggles a few years ago.

Hard Candy. After meeting in a chat room, 14-year-old girl Hayley meets 30-something Jeff at a coffee shop, goes back to his place for drinks, and Jeff gets the camera out. But, it turns out that Hayley may be the predator. The reviewer at allmovie wrote "Of course, topicality can only get a film so far in terms of finding it an audience, and despite the controversial and somewhat off-putting central concept, it's a clever combination of tense thrills and directorial restraint that prove the ultimate key to Hard Candy's success."
Thank You For Smoking. A movie with an "All Star Cast!" that's actually funny. Publicist Nick Naylor "gleefully manipulates everyone and everything in his path" in his work to support smoking and defend tobacco companies.
Mission Impossible: III. Tom Cruise returns as agent Ethan Hunt working to rescue a fellow agent kidnapped by arms dealer Davian. This is supposed to be the best Mission Impossible movie by far. So, stop fretting over Cruise's press statements and enjoy the picture.
DaVinci Code. The big-time bestseller brought to life on screen. Unfortunately I ordered the full screen version instead of the widescreen version.
The Filth and the Fury: A Sex Pistols Film. The Pistols lasted for 26 months and one album, just long enough to cause a furor and have a disastrous U.S. tour. Lucky for you they filmed it, huh?
Go for Zucker. German comedy about pool shark and gambler Jaecki Zucker. After jackie's mother dies he has to feign being an Orthodox Jew to receive his inheritance. Not an easy thing to do since Jackie lapsed years ago, and his wife is a gentile.
Lake House. Not to be confused with the James Patterson novel. Doctor Kate has mail ging to her old lake house forwarded to her new address. Instead she gets mail from the previous owner architect Alex. Their letters are somehow traveling through time to one another.
CDs
The Crane Wife by the Decemberists. Allmusic calls them"an accordion- and bouzouki-wielding, British folk-inspired collective from Portland, OR, that dresses in period Civil War outfits and has been known to cover Morrisey" and gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The Filth and the Fury: A Sex Pistols Film. The Pistols lasted for 26 months and one album, just long enough to cause a furor and have a disastrous U.S. tour. Lucky for you they filmed it, huh?
Go for Zucker. German comedy about pool shark and gambler Jaecki Zucker. After jackie's mother dies he has to feign being an Orthodox Jew to receive his inheritance. Not an easy thing to do since Jackie lapsed years ago, and his wife is a gentile.
Lake House. Not to be confused with the James Patterson novel. Doctor Kate has mail ging to her old lake house forwarded to her new address. Instead she gets mail from the previous owner architect Alex. Their letters are somehow traveling through time to one another.

The Crane Wife by the Decemberists. Allmusic calls them"an accordion- and bouzouki-wielding, British folk-inspired collective from Portland, OR, that dresses in period Civil War outfits and has been known to cover Morrisey" and gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Meltdown by Justin Roberts. A kids music CD. Featured on the Today Show and full of songs kids love.

Wild Fire by Nelson DeMille. A realistic and detailed novel by DeMille. In 2002 former NYPD Detective John Corey and his FBI agent wife, Kate, investigate a right wing plot to destroy two U.S. cities with suitcase nukes. The explosions will set in place a secret government plan for retaliation that would flatten most of the Middle East.
Chasing the Dead by Joe Schreiber. Thirty-Four year old single mom Sue Young gets a call telling her that her infant daughter has been kidnapped. A mix of crime and horror as the kidnapper forces Sue to travel through the night and complete various tasks in penance for a childhood crime Sue committed.
Hidden Assassins by Robert Wilson. Seville, Spain Police Inspector Jefe Javier Falcon investigates the explosion of an apartment building. A mosque had been in the basement and the question is: Were the mosque members careless with their own explosives, or were they targeted? "Wilson constructs a richly layered, intricately plotted story that examines the corrosive consequences of all types of terrorism, from the geopolitical to the domestic, on victims and perpetrators."
Giraffe by J.M. Ledgard. I ordered this book because it is based on a bizarre incident in communist Czechoslovakian zoo. The world's largest herd of captive giraffes was killed by the government in 1975 with no official explanation provided. Ledgard imagines the people behind the story and includes the scientist hired to follow the herd after their African capture, to the sharpshooter assigned to kill the animals.
Hard Way by Carol Lea Benjamin. Private Investigator Rachel Alexander, and her dog Dashiell, go undercover as a homeless person to investigate the murder of a retired businessman who was pushed in front of a NY subway train.

Treasure of Khan by Clive and Dirk Cussler. Dirk Pitt rescues a boat crew in Siberia's Lake Baikal and goes on to discover a Mongolian tycoon intent on becoming a modern day Genghis Khan. Pitt travels from Russia to the Gobi Desert.
Next by Michael Crichton. L.A. Rex by Will Beall. A rookie policeman tries to hide his friendship with a ganglord as he and his experienced partner investigate a murder in South Central Los Angeles. Very gritty, written by a LAPD Officer.
Act of Treason by Vince Flynn. A presidential candidate's motorcade is attacked by terrorists two weeks before the election. After the candidate's wife dies, he sweeps into office. CIA agent Mitch Rapp is told to follow an evidence trail that leads back to Washington.
