Downloadable e-Books From the Library
There Are A Ton of Them. You have access to 2,459 e-Books through your library card. The titles are downloadable through the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium's contract with Overdrive. Just log-in with your library card, select titles, check-out and then download. Be patient, Overdrive's search feature is not very good; try the advanced search or use the browse feature.
Today's press release from Amazon and Overdrive touting their new partnership should mean all the PDF and EPUB files available through Overdrive will soon be available for loan on Kindles. Kindles currently do NOT work work with Overdrive.
If Overdrive and Amazon work together library users will have much wider access to the self-published work offered for sale on Amazon. Yes, much self-published work is crud. But, many authors are now able to make old, out-of-print titles available again. Authors are also able to publish good novels that print publishers have passed on.
Anyway, electronic publishing and self-publishing is a changing landscape but libraries - and this library - are working to collect and make available e-Books for you, the user.
An Aside: 42 of the 100 most popular e-Books for Wisconsin libraries are romances.

Beaglemania: a Pet Rescue mystery by Linda O. Johnston. According to the cover four Beagle puppies get lost in a storm sewer and climb atop one another to look out a storm drain. According to the author bio Johnston owns two spaniels. I own a big, hairy beast masquerading as a dog.
A Creed in Stone Creek by Linda Lael Miller. Another McKettrick romance set in Arizona. According to the cover illustrations Arizona is populated with lanky male models wearing cowboy hats.
World's Greatest Sleuth by Steve Hockensmith. Big Red and Old Red leave the range for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago to compete in a mystery solving contest.
Priest's Graveyard by Ted Dekker. According to the author photo the author needs a haircut. Oh, he lives in Austin. Well, that's okay then.
Rise of the Iron Moon by Stephen Hunt. Hunt not Hunter. No rifle shooting. A steampunk novel.

Friends Booksale SCORE!

The Friends Booksale is this weekend and I ran across this advance reader's copy of Daniel Woodrell's Bayou Trilogy with Under the Bright Lights, Muscle for the Wing, and The Ones You Do.
After paying for the above item I decided to keep looking and lucked out on this paperback version of Bill Crider 's Of All Sad Words. I don't see Crider paperbacks very often.
I really like the cover design on this. I think it is much better than the hardcover's design. I already read this novel but I can use it to fix any wobbly tables.

One benefit of having an office is that I can listen to music while working. My favorite radio station is the BBC's 6 Music. They just played this tune. The gal, Agnes Obel, is Norwegian. Her accent matches that of another Scandinavian girl singer, Nina Persson of The Cardigans. But not the accent of Bjork.

The Wire: the complete series. 23 discs covering all four seasons. An engrossing crime drama set in modern Baltimore. I've never seen the show and there are 60 episodes.
When I Rise: let your voice be heard featuring Barbara Smith Conrad. Conrad was a co-ed at the University of Texas when she was cast as the lead in a school opera. But, since this was 1956 and Conrad is black trouble ensued. The story hit the national papers, attracted attention of Harry Belafonte who called her at her dorm, and Conrad's career took off into international fame. Fifty years later Conrad returned to Austin.
Remember this incident, Crider? You must have been a teenager so maybe you were too busy reading Amazing Stories.

A nearby farm must have spreading their chicken manure this morning. The smell only slightly disturbed the sunny and pleasant weather.

Satori by Don Winslow. "A Novel based on Trevanian's Shibumi" I read Shibumi and the novel was entertaining but far-fetched. Nicholai Hel is 26 years old and in solitary confinement in 1951 Japan. The Americans promise freedom and a passport if he travels to Beijing and kills a Russian.

Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Moseley. How do you pronounce Ptolemy? Mosley wrote a book entitled Walkin' the Dog. I did an image search on Google trying to find a photo of Mosley with a dog. No dice. I did find this near Mosley's name on Neil Gaiman's blog. Gaiman really seems to like his dog; he has dog photos all over his posts.
I Think I Love You by Allison Pearson. 1998 London has two life long David Cassidy fans finally getting to meet the former teen star. Was there a dog on that awful Partridge Family show?

A Grouse Hunter's Almanac: the other kind of hunting by Mark Parman. Twenty years of bird hunting. I was flipping through this and came to:
Once while mountain bike hunting in a section of county forest where both pursuits are allowed, I rolled up on a young couple out mountain biking. the dog was thirty yards ahead, leading me down the trail. When I rounded a corner, the couple was petting him, and he was working the free massage for all it was worth...When he spotted my gun and the tail feathers poking out the front of my vest, his face went cold. Clearly both were uncomfortable with me, although maybe they just didn't like or understand guns...Did they think I rode around with a loaded shotgun, blasting away at whatever moved like some sort of mountain bike Rambo? They pedaled away quickly, looking over their shoulders and whispering to each other. They didn't seem sure about me, but they did seem to like the dog, which is a start.

Delays Due to Cataloging Issues
Cataloging Delays
After a recent software update by Sirsi all newly uploaded records are showing double. So we have not been unable to add new material. This is not too bad for a small library like ours but I imagine Beaver Dam, Racine, and West Bend are really annoyed. Here are some items that were already in the pipeline.

Heartwood by Belva Plain.

Dead Zero by Stephen Hunter. Another love letter to .30 caliber rifle shooting. The novel is dedicated to Nick Ziolkowski.

This morning I received an email in my junk box from Piccirilli asking for assistance. He is in Southern England on vacation and has lost his money and passport! Oh, what disaster! Please help me!
I assume the real Piccirilli is not pleased with someone using his name for a scam.

Running the Sahara by James Moll. "An attempt by three ultra marathoners to run across the length of Africa's Sahara desert, tackling not only the elements, but also unimaginable physical and emotional obstacles...anticipating two marathons a day, for eighty days...without a day off."
Ha! The guys in Top Gear out did that. They drove across across an African desert in crappy, used cars. (This episode scared my oldest son when he first watched it. He thought one of the show's hosts was going to be left behind in the desert.)

Georgia Warhorse by J.J. Grey and Mofro. A continuing byproduct of Anthony Neil Smith who gave an online recommendation of Orange Blossoms.
Be in Love by Locksley. Very energetic pop songs with plenty of guitar. Dudes are out of Madison and, once again, favored by Little Steven. A well-done video that catches the energy of the tune:

Wisconsin Angel: Cordelia Harvey, Civil War Heroine by Jane Walrath Solem. Fictionalization of Harvey's work on behalf of Wisconsin's soldiers.
Though Not Dead by Dana Stabenow. Danger in Alaska with investigator Kate Shugak. Shugak's uncle has died and his will requests Kate to "find his father" who disappeared right after the uncle's birth. Danger ensues.
Fatal Error by J.A. Jance. Ali Reynolds is about to enter the Arizona Police Academy when an old friend, Brenda, shows up looking for her fiance. The fiance is a sociopathic bigamist who ends up murdered with Brenda as the main suspect.
Fadeaway Girl by Martha Grimes. Cover illustration has a maid, in maid's uniform, peaking through a keyhole.
Strong Justice by Jon Land. I read something good about this one. Something about a female Texas Ranger. The cover photo if a pistol muzzle in focus with an out-of-focus gal pointing the gun at the camera.

I Just Used an Entire 50 Lb. Bag of Salt on Our Sidewalk Ice

A thin and slick layer of ice covered the pavement this morning. I used an entire 50 lb. bag on all our walkways. (That's 22.68 kilos, Dunedin.)

Death Race 2 starring SEAN BEAN. This looks like B-movie heaven. Convicts have to "drive - or die." There are other actors in this but SEAN BEAN is in it so who cares about the other dudes?
Julia starring Tilda Swinton. Alcoholic Julia lives in a booze haze and takes a try at crime. A try that escalates beyond control. Swinton was in Young Adam with Ewan McGregor in which both actors have full frontal nudity. Boy, I'll tell you, it was a shock seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi's penis.
Social Network starring Jesse Eisenberg. I still have not seen this flick.
Winter's Bone starring [actors] It is a great book and the movie is supposed to be stellar. Here it is in the original Swedish.

Outsourced by Dave Zeltersman. Laid off software engineers have plan to rob a bank. The Russian mafia gets involved. Roger Smith really likes Zeltersman's work and that is a high endorsement.
Divine Misfortune by A. Lee Martinez. Another humorous fantasy novel by Martinez. Teri and Phil go online to find a personal God to help their career advancement. They find Luka "raccoon god of prosperity". Luka just wants a cut of the cash and a place to crash.

Chloe finds "that someone is desperately trying to cover up all traces of the bowl's existence - by any means necessary."
A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez. This title sounds tailored to fit the book group crowd but it had a decent review. American expatriate in Kabul opens a coffee shop and meets neat people among the Afghanis and the foreign workers in the area.
Red Garden by Alice Hoffman. Roses, tulips, bell peppers, hot peppers, pomegranates, apples, cherries, raspberries, cranberries, mangoes, radishes, red lettuce, potatoes.

Charlie Hood and Joe Pike Right Wrongs and Love Their Cars

Border Lords by T. Jefferson Parker. Deputy Sheriff Charlie Hood is still assigned to the ATF task force in Southern California. An undercover agent has gone "black" and Charlie looks for him, wondering if his pal is overly dedicated or had his morals skewed. I'll bet Hood drives around a lot in his Camaro.
Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer. I have never read any of this guy's books but this thriller had a good review in either Library Journal or Booklist. Archivist in D.C. finds a book owned by George Washington and now bad guys are out to kill him. The bad guys are after the archivist not George Washington. Washington is already dead.
Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland. Novelization of the gal who started making glass lampshades for Tiffany.
Sentry by Robert Crais. Joe Pike wears sunglasses and protects a family. The family is not what it appears. I don't think Hood and Pike would get along. But, Pike does not get along well with anybody but Elvis Cole. Robert Crais is going to be at Mystery One in Milwaukee on Sunday the 23rd. I don't think I'll be able to attend.
Crais is in Houston this Sunday the 16th. You going, Crider?
Crais was passing out Pike temporary tattoos on a previous tour. Here is the best use of one of the tattoos.

The Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens. Yeah, Stevens is kind of weird. But, the songs are usually interesting.

Machete starring Danny Trejo, Steven Segal, Michelle Rodriguez, others. Some guy out for violent vengeance.
Dinner for Schmucks starring Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Ron Livingston. Guy has to find a buffoon to take to his boss's monthly dinner. Succeeds.
Fiction
Charming Quirks of Others by Alexander McCall Smith. Isabel Dalhousie book.
Judas Gate by Jack Higgins. Some sort of shoot'em up.
Family Affair by Debbie Macomber. Author photo has a smiling Macomber wearing a necklace with a big honking pendant. That pendant looks big enough to make her fall over. I'm not saying it looks bad, just that it looks heavy.
The author bio says she lives in Washington state and Florida. Seattle to Orlando is a 5.5 hour non-stop flight. If Macomber books a flight with a connection it is an 8-9 hour trip. She sells a ton of books so maybe she spends the cash on a private charter.
Seattle to Dunedin, NZ would take 28.5 hours and cost $1,700. Seattle to Paris is 15 hours - but that is with a stop in Los Angeles.
