Ultimate Harely-Davidson: new edition by Hugo Wilson. Wilson has been writing motorcycle books for Dorling Kindersley for years. These are always fun.

Hey, I've Met Nine of These People

Sea Creatures by Susanna Daniel. Daniel came out here a year or two ago for a book talk. Unfortunately the weather was lousy and another event was going on downtown so the only audience was one dude, a Friend of the Library, and myself. More family drama set in Florida. Try it out.
Kwik Krimes edited by Otto Penzler. "Contributions by more than 80 authors." Short crime stories of "no more than one thousand words." I have spoken to:
1. Bill Crider. Very briefly because I had nothing of interest to say and did not want to fanboy-gush at him.
2. Tasha Alexander. Very nice lady who's husband just received permanent U.S. residency. Her novels do well here.
3. Raymond Benson. Who I probably bored the heck out of.
4. Reed Farrell Coleman. I am very certain I said "hello" at some point.
5. Christa Faust. She asked if there was creamer for the coffee and I said, "No." Again, I had nothing of interest to provide.
6. Chris Grabenstein. I spoke to him quite a bit. Grabenstein is personable and has experience as a performer, including as a stand-up comic, so he has the skill to keep a conversation going.
7. Parnell Hall. I spoke to him on an escalator and asked if he was filming another video.
8. Sean Doolittle. I've seen him around at a couple events but I had nothing to say.
9. Patti Abbott. I read her blog and have sent some emails.
Three Can Keep A Secret by Archer Mayor. I used to read all these New Hampshire based novels featuring policeman Joe Gunther. I got off track when I read one that I thought was lame.
October List by Jeffrey Deaver. He was at Murder and Mayhem in Muskego and I asked him, "Are you up next?"
Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson. Fantasy fiction fun.
Catch and Release by Lawrence Block. Short stories by the expert writer.
Deadline by Sandra Brown. Brown has an honorary Doctorate from TCU. I went to the Aggie football game there in 1993.
Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. Page 357 says, " The man in the chinos and t-shirt fired his weird pistol at Dan."
The Bride Wore Size 12 by Meg Cabot. Page 319 says, "She nods."
Silencing Eve by Iris Johansen. page 239 says, "Silence."

Somewhere in Milwaukee I suppose. Page 291 sayd, "Gooseberry Meringue Pie...In another saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar and cornstarch."
Women's Health Big Book of Yofa by Kathryn Budig. I ordered this after someone received a copy from another library. I did not order this because of models in tight yoga outfits. Page 278 says, "You are unique, talented and blessed."
New Midwestern Table by Amy Thielen. "200 Heartland Recipes" Page 128 says, "The eelpout, a silly-looking-fish, is a fitting mascot for these shenanigans."
Si-Cology: tales and wisdom from Duck Dynasty's favorite uncle by Si Robertson with Mark Schlabach. My wife watches that show sometimes. Si is the one who carries around a gallon container of iced tea wherever he goes.
Salinger by David Shields and Shane Salerno. Biography of the famous and famously reclusive author. Except, Salinger was not all that reclusive. He was active in his own town, he just never gave interviews.
Ava Gardner: the secret conversations by Peter Evans and Ava Gardner. Ava interviewed with Evans and was so candid and forthcoming she canceled publication until after her death. Page 166 says, "It was always a mistake to tell Peter Lawford anything. I liked him but he was a terrible gossip."
Who-ology: Doctor Who: the official miscellany by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright. Page 181 says, "Five full-body models were made plus a large T-Rex head for close-ups and a pterodactyl hand puppet, and these were contracted out to a model-making company."

Paint the Town on Saturday, September 28th.
Paint the Town
The Main Street program's annual Paint the Town is this Saturday evening from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The library is participating and showing off our new interior renovation. If you are attending please come by. The party at the American Legion won't start until 7:30 PM anyway.
That is why I have been cleaning any marks off the new carpet and will touch up the dings in the new paint.

Filming a TV Show in the Magazine Room
TV Show
Committee Films came to town last week to film an episode of America Unearthed for History Channel. On Friday afternoon they used the library's reading room to film an interview between the show's host and a guest. On Thursday they used mini-submarines to explore Rock Lake. I did not get photos of the submarines.

The regular Cars and Coffee event is one Sunday a month on Church St. I sometimes go down with my kids and father, when he is in town. Sweet Lips art gallery sells coffee and espresso drinks. I usually buy an Americano.

Why Did I Buy This?

Tampa by Alissa Nutting. There has been press and word-of-mouth about this novel of a female teacher who is a serial abuser of teen boys. Megan Abbott wrote an opinion piece about Tampa for some online magazine.
Impossible Monsters edited by Kasey Lansdale. Collection of horror short stories. I bought this because the editor's father kept mentioning the book. Lansdale is more musician than editor.
The Score: a graphic novel by Richard Stark, adapted and illustrated by Darwyn Cooke. Why did I buy this one? Because Stark's real name was Donald Westlake and his Parker series novels are genius.

We went to see some planes but had to stand in line about one hour to do a walkthrough of a B-24. The B-29 came in to land as we were waiting. Max Hastings's book Retribution: the Battle for Japan, 1944-1945 said the B-29s had all sorts of trouble because the plane was rushed into service.

Finally Catalogued

All The Young Warriors by Anthony Neil Smith. I wonder if people won't read this book because our adhesive mylar cover has a bunch of air bubbles stuck underneath it. It looks bad and feels weird. Good book though. Minnesota policeman is intent on going to Somalia and finding the two young men responsible for his girlfriend's murder in MN.
Baddest Ass by Anthony Neil Smith. This one has a bunch of trapped air bubbles as well. I may try that thing where I take a pocket knife, poke the holes, and try to squeeze out the air.

Stories by Joel Goldman, Lisa Klink, and Phoef Sutton. The Dead Man travels the U.S. fighting evil with his axe. I want to read the Klink story just so I can say "Klink goes klunk". The series has it's own theme song.
Buffalo Ridge by Forrest Peterson. Again? What the heck is it with books I have no memory of ordering? This is a MN publisher so maybe the guy is from WI. Young family in southwest MN struggling with farming, local drug scourge and "ordinary people trying to survive."
The Name of the Game is Death and One Endless Hour by Dan J. Marlowe. Reprint from Stark House Press of hardboiled crime novels from 1962 and 1969. Stark House published the most recent novel by the always brilliant Charlie Stella.
Inferno by Dan Brown. I ordered a second copy.
All The Young Warriors by Anthony Neil Smith. I wonder if people won't read this book because our adhesive mylar cover has a bunch of air bubbles stuck underneath it. It looks bad and feels weird. Good book though. Minnesota policeman is intent on going to Somalia and finding the two young men responsible for his girlfriend's murder in MN.
Baddest Ass by Anthony Neil Smith. This one has a bunch of trapped air bubbles as well. I may try that thing where I take a pocket knife, poke the holes, and try to squeeze out the air.
Well, at least I can now read this in paper. I was going to mess with the Kindle version and never got to it.
Adventures of Wynn and Edmund: book one of the "The Curse of the Amethyst Ring" by Kayleigh R. Wimpee. I don't know what the heck the deal is with this one. Did I order this? Was it a donation? Moffie by Andre Carl van Der Merwe. Fictionalized memoir of a gay South African drafted into the army during the bush wars in the 1980s. He does not have a good time. I think I ran across this book when reading about South African author Roger Smith. This is supposed to be very well done.
Under a Texas Sky by Dorothy Garlock. Romance with young actress trying find out cause of trouble that is effecting her movie shoot.
Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton Disclafani. Book about a teen girl in a 1930 summer camp. Book has had lots of press attention.
Undead and Unsure by Mary Janice Davidson. Latest in the series about some zombie woman, or something.
The Beast by Faye Kellerman. Latest in the series about my dead dog. Oh, wait. This is actually the latest in the Decker/Lazarus cop series.

Compound Murder by Bill Crider. You annual summertime infusion of Rhodes-ness. The Sheriff investigates the murder of an English instructor at the community college. The Sheriff eats baloney. The Sheriff drinks Dr. Pepper. The Sheriff politely tolerates nitwits and nincompoops.

Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith. I remember reading the review of this earlier in teh year. I put the item on the Maybe-I'll-Order-This list but did not do so until the author's real identity was released. It didn;t take long for a new dust cover to go on and have Rowling's name on it.

Rose Harbor in Bloom by Debbie Macomber. Macomber's author photo is on the back cover but only covers about 50% of the area.
Last Kiss Goodbye by Karen Robards. Robards has blond hair and a purple shirt in her author photo.
Death Angel by Linda Fairstein. Looks like Fairstein took her author photo at about 5:30 (cannot see her watch clearly).
The Highway by C.J. Box. Box is posing with his Labrador dog. My in-laws have two Labs. One has a big, huge head.

UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen. we have a couple other UFC DVDs that still check-out okay so I figured to order another. I watched the undercard of a UFC bout on cable television a week or two ago. The cable broadcast was mentioning the upcoming pay-per-view broadcast and so I looked to see how much it cost. A lot. The PPV cost a lot of money. No wonder people go to bars to watch this stuff.

Finding Freedom: the untold story of Joshua Glover, Runaway Slave by Ruby West Jackson and Walter T. McDonald. 4.25 hours on 4 CDs. Runaway slave broken out of jail by Wisconsin abolitionists in 1854. This reminds me of Solomon Northup. Which reminds me of the upcoming film version. Which reminds me of Chwitel Ejiofor. Which reminds me of Red Belt and how convincing Ejiofor was in that role.

Dead Dahmer Dukes

Evil Dead starring Jane Levy, Sholih Fernandez. Remake. Remote cabin is inhabited by five pals and a monster.
Jeffrey Dahmer Files by Chris James Thompson. Documentary featuring the Milwaukee Medical Examiner, investigating Detective and a neighbor. When I was living in student housing at Murdoch University in Australia a gal who lived in the apartment on the other side of the breezeway had a fascination with Dahmer. She also had a nose ring, nose rings were very weird at that time.
About twenty years ago an independent comics publisher in Champaign, Hart Fisher, wrote a Dahmer comic book. The comic was intentionally offensive and there were protests by victims families from Milwaukee. The publisher welcomed and loved the attention.
In 1993 Fisher's girlfriend, Michelle Davis, was raped and murdered at the Charter House Inn, a low-rent motel, in Urbana. The murderer spun a bizarre tale of meeting a guy on campus, that the other guy committede the rapes and murders, and then hid the murder weapon in a bush on the University of Illinois Quad. Fisher says he spun out of control after the girlfriend's murder.
A year or two later a high school classmate of mine was drunk at a bar speaking about how she met the murderer nights before the murder. She was drunkenly dramatic with, "That could have been me!" That classmate of mine died in a car wreck in 2001.
Another classmate was murdered by her boyfriend in Hawaii in 2005. That classmate was left brain dead from a beating but she was also pregnant by the killer. She was kept on life support for three weeks and the baby was born prematurely and adopted by her brother and his wife.
I didn't really know any of the above people. Especially Dahmer.
Dukes of Hazzard: fifth season starring Tom Wopat, John Schneider, Catherine Bach, Those Two Other Guys Who Filled In. Season five where Wopat and Schneider held out during contract disputes and a couple other actors were hired as leads. Wopat is a Cheesehead. The Tommie awards for high school musical productions are named after him.

The library entered a drawing to win four tickets to Packers Family Night on July 30th as part of the Packers' Leap Into Reading summer program. The library won the tickets and staff held a drawing composed of all the Summer Reading Program participants. The Schmidt family won the tickets.

The A-Team: Season Three starring Mr. T. So, the A-Team is supposed to be so famous across the country but no one ever finds and arrests them? Local police never seem to be on the lookout, it's only that MP guy who always arrives too late.
Regular Show: the complete first and second seasons starring Walking Gumball Machine, Raccoon, other weird stuff. Kids cartoon with nonsense, silliness, etc.

Piccirilli, Steel, Burke, Brooks, So On, So Forth

Last Whisper in the Dark by Tom Piccirilli. Remember a year or so ago when Piccirilli had a big lump of brain cancer in his head? Well, the cancer is gone, gone, gone. The successful medical treatment is especially good for Piccirilli, and good for you because he wrote this book. More crime family fiction and fracture on Long Island. I'm currently reading some book of his printed in 2006.

First Sight by Danielle Steel. Does Steel write these anymore? At four per year I wonder if she does an outline and hires out the rest of the job.

Witch Wraith: Shannara's Dark Legacy by Terry Brooks. This has a two page color foldout with artwork and a map. Terry Brooks has no beard. What kind of sci-fi/fantasy author has no beard?

Little Free Libraries were started a 2009. They are small, usually freestanding boxes with a give one, take one philosophy. This one is on Ray St. in Lake Mills. I checked the map on the Little Free Library website and there are no official ones in NZ.
Rock Lake
Rock Lake is 1,371 acres. The City has several public access points along the beach. The most popular are Sandy Beach and Bartles Beach parks. But, there are several smaller, and hidden away swim spots along the lakeside.

Visiting Tom: a man, a highway, and the road to roughneck grace by Michal Perry. 7 CDs at 7.5 hours. Michael Perry is a great performer and reads this himself. The chain came off his bicycle and when I tried to put the chain back on the sprockets the mosquitoes were all over me. I just carried the bike since we were a block from home.
Tuesday's Child by Fern Michaels. 8 CDs at 9 hours. Lawyer helps client who is finally exonerated of murder after ten years in prison. We (the ten-year-old as well) were swimming at Rock Lake. No mosquitoes over the water but there was a honking big horse fly.

Game of Thrones Comic Book

Game of Thrones: the graphic novel: volume 2 by George R.R. Martin and Daniel Abraham and Tommy Patterson. Aww, nuts. This is volume two. Volume one must not have come in yet. This is the comic book version. I have not watched the television program but I hear it has plenty of nudity. I optimistically scanned through this.
Dead Inside by Victoria Houston. Another mystery from the lady in Northern Wisconsin. I'm currently reading a book set on Lake Superior's Northern Michigan shore.
The Execution of Noa P. Singleton by Elizabeth L. Silver. This book has been in the press a lot lately. A convicted murderer on death row refuses to say what happened. Even when the high-powered, politically-connected mother of the victim offers to get a commutation in return for the full story.
Pines by Blake Crouch. This won some sort of award. Or was shortlisted for some sort of award. Let me check the internets...oh, maybe not. There will be some TV show version with Matt Dillon though.

Then I walk around with my coffee looking to suck up to Victor Gischler. Gischler is not scheduled for 2013. Maybe I can walk around and suck up to Megan Abbott or Duane Swierczynski.
