Tequila Sunset by Sam Hawken. I ordered a second copy by mistake. Since all paperbacks are processed by the vendor I cannot send them back. Oh well. More opportunity for you to read this crime novel set in Northern Mexico. I read Hawken's first novel but cannot recall which characters survived or if they appear in here.

Page 138 says, "Like if you see a photo of a celeb walking down the street holding an Arby's shake, first of all, those shakes are delicious, so celebrities should walk around with them, but second of all, they were probably paid by Arby's to do it. They, most likely, had their hair and makeup done too, and I'll bet you my entire brass snail collection that there is water in that shake cup (Smartwater because Coca-Cola has deals with celebrities, and celebrities don't eat dairy). I know that some oft-papped stars drive miles and miles out of their way so they can be photographed at pre-arranged locations."

The Vacationers by Emma Straub. Former Wisconsinite writes another novel. A family on vacation in Mallorca bring their problems along.
Vertigo 42 by Martha Grimes. What color is that sweater Grimes is wearing in her author photo? Violet? Pink? Pink-Violet? Mauve? It's a nice color but I should cannot name it.
The Keeper by John Lescroart. I can name Lescroart's shirt colors. Grey and black. Because the author photo is black and white.
Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch. Famous actor dies on operating table and the doctor tells tale of doctor's bad vacation in France at actor's home.

Ledger should go after Maberry for Maberry's Facebook posting mania. The Ledger series is fun and the narrator, Ray Porter, really chews up the narration.
Bad Wolf by Nele Neuhaus. I'm not sure what this is. Something about a serial killer in Frankfurt.
Sniper's Honor by Stephen Hunter. Sniping snipers snipe.
Suspicion by Joseph Finder. Guy needing money for his daughter's tuition accepts personal loan and DEA goes after him for taking drug money.

Scott Phillips Returns With A New Novel

Hop Alley by Scott Phillips. I missed the pre-publication notices on this one and lucked out by seeing a review in the New York Times Book Review. Phillips specializes in unsavory male protagonists who do good despite their own selfish natures. It's 1890 Denver and low-rent photographer Bill Ogden, from Phillips's Cottonwood, is dodging trouble with a drug addicted girlfriend and violent neighborhood.
Dead Lil' Hustler by Victoria Houston. Another fishing themed mystery in Wisconsin's Northwoods.
Ghost Ship by Clive Cussler and Graham Brown. That's weird. This Cussler cover doesn't have big fiery explosions all over the front.
Suspicion by Joseph Finder. Finder is not wearing a tie for his author photo. You know who Finder reminds me of? Allison Moorer. Only because this Moorer song is playing right now on my computer.
I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. Hayes scripted The Road Warrior. The Lord Humongous is a reasonable man.
SciFi/Fantasy
Ancillary Justice by Ann Lecke. This just won a big award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Future artificial intelligence lives inside people. Or something.
Skin Game by Jim Butcher. Guy on the cover has a Colt revolver with an 8" barrel. I don't know those revolvers well enough to identify the model.

The Kill Switch by james Rollins and Grant Blackwood. When I took a motorcycle riding class in 1996 they used the FINE-C acronym for pre-starting procedure. Fuel, Ignition, Neutral, Engine Cut-Off, and Clutch. I always used FINK-C for Kill Switch.
Sniper's Honor by Stephen Hunter. Another sniper book.
The Kraken Project by Douglas Preston. Something about an artificial intelligence program escaping onto the web.
The Son by Jo Nesbo. Guy in prison story. Written by a Norwegian from Norway.
Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore. Girl becomes pal with ultra-rich classmate and finds the violence keeping the family on top.
Child of Mine by Davdi and Beverly Lewis. Another Amish novel.

No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. surveillance state by Glenn Greenwald. That's Glenn with two Ns. Document excerpts but no photos. Greenwald lives in Brazil, I wonder if he has bought tickets for the World Cup or the Olympics.
Fighting Shadows in Vietnam by Michael P. Moynihan, Jr. I keep buying these Vietnam memoirs from McFarland Publishing because they sound real interesting. I'm not sure how well they checkout. We added Killer Kane a couple weeks ago and no one has taken it home. No photographs in this one.

Almost Big Time Author

An Untamed State by Roxanne Gay. Gay lets a lot of attention from other writers but has not yet hit a wider audience. Gay teaches - or used to teach, I don't know what she does - at Eastern Illinois University. She wrote a blog post once about not having many leisure opportunities in Charleston and driving to Champaign to go to the movies. I wrote a completely unhelpful comment that it could be worse, she could be living in Hoopeston, IL.
I'm not sure what this novel is about. I'm typed out and won't check.
Okay, I checked anyway. Plot: Daughter of very wealthy Haitian man is kidnapped in Port-au-Prince.

XXX Shamus by Red Hammond (Anthony Neil Smith). Author pulls finished novel out of dusty drawer and publishes it with a small press. A guy who specializes in finding runaways gets in plenty of trouble and sex. The back cover has an unsettling blurb by Victor Gischler. The other back cover blurb by Allan Guthrie says, "the most transgressive PI novel ever written." What the heck does that mean? I do not know. I guess I'll find out when I read the book.
Sword Sisters by Tara Cardinal and Alex Bledsoe. Fantasy novel that, according to the cover illustration, has swords, a redhead, a brunette, and big scary spiders. The back cover says something about a heroine.
The Blue Moon by Lorena McCourtney. A Mysteries of Sparrow Island book. These gentle read mysteries checkout a lot.
Nature's Bounty by Ellen Harris. Another one.

Gargantuan Gischler Greatness
Fiction
Ink Mage by Victor Gischler. Gischler writes a fantasy novel. Something about a magical tattoo on a young woman's back. The plot does not matter because Gischler never writes junk. I'd have this at home - or already read - except my reading time is spoken for with work related titles.
Joe Ledger: Special Ops by Jonathan Maberry. Maberry's character Joe Ledger works for a super-secretive federal agency. Ledger gets into all sorts of fisticuffs and shoot-em-ups with terrorists, zombies, mutant animals, aliens, etc. Fun stuff. This is a short story collection.

Looks like a dystopian thing set in New York City with "the wealthy spend[ing] their days tapped into virtual reality; the rest have to fend for themselves in the streets." Easy Everyday Gluten-Free Cooking by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt. Heh-heh, I wrote "butt".
Killer Kane: a Marine long-range recon Team Leader in Vietnam, 1967-1968 by Andrew R. Finlayson. This looked neat because Finlayson used a lot of archival material to write the book. Rather than rely on memory and conversation Finlayson used Official Command Chronologies, letters, and other documents. As his Preface states, "I wanted to avoid the tendency of some writers to inject information that might be colored by fading memory or personal prejudice."
Busted: a tale of corruption and betrayal in the City of Brotherly Love by Wendy Ruderman and Barbara Laker. Philadelphia newspaper reports discover a web of corruption in the police department. They don't mention Duane Swierczynksi in the acknowledgments. I don't know Swierczynski but I think he journalismed in Philadelphia.
The Book of Money: everything you need to know about how world finances work by Daniel Conaghan and Dan Smith. Dull cover on the outside, lots of neat graphics and color on the inside. This is a pretty neat book.
Minnesota and Wisconsin: month-by-month gardening by Melinda Myers.

Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Do we have two copies of this? Nope, I missed buying this when it initially came out. I heard an audio edition of True Grit narrated by Tartt. Tartt did well.
Love and Treasure by Ayelet Waldman. Guy who was guarding Nazi loot in 1945 tasks his granddaughter to find a woman from the war.
The Collector by Nora Roberts. Roberts has a new author photo but the photo is pixellated and rough. Someone screwed up the cover design.

Carnal Curiosity by Stuart Woods. Is it really Stuart Woods? Is Woods cranking these things out or is he hiring ghosts? I really do not know. Answer me Internet!
Redeployment by Phil Kay. I think this was discussed in the New York Times Book Review. Or, maybe not. Short stories dealing with service in Iraq during the war.
The Dealer and the Dead by Gerald Seymour. Arms dealer to a Croatian village in 1992 never showed up with the arms. The village was overrun and mostly slaughtered. The surviving villagers have found the dealer's identity and are out for revenge.
Keep Quiet by Lisa Scottoline. Fly leaf says relationship...urging...goes alone...deserted road...connection...bonding opportunity...tragedy...forced...plunges...crushing weight...ruin them all.
The Contractors by Harry Hunsicker. Here is what I know about Hunsicker: 1) he lives in Dallas, 2) he has long hair. This sounds like a good one. A contractor for the DEA in Dallas intercepts a drug shipment and ends up holding a high-value witness. He has to get the witness to Marfa, TX in spite of competition.
Night Diver by Elizabeth Lowell. Lowell's "favorite activity is exploring the western United States to find the landscapes that speak to her soul and inspire her writing." Oh boy...

Bitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett. That's two Ns, two Ns and Two Ts. A medium in the twenties helps a bootlegger with a hex. That is an unclear sentence. Does the bootlegger have a hex on him, or does the bootlegger want to hex someone else? Couldn't I just rewrite that sentence and avoid the confusion? No.
Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare. She wouldn't be romancing a Duke in Lake Mills. Not unless she has no sense of smell, because the chicken manure farm south of town is spreading manure this morning and everything smells awful.

Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. This title speaks to me. It says, "There is a goblin and he is an emperor."
He Drank, and Saw the Spider by Alex Bledsoe. This title speaks to me. It says, "What?" The fly leaf says, "P.I. novel with swords." Bledsoe lives in Mount Horeb. My family stops for breakfast there when driving to KS each summer.

Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler. Four men in Wisconsin. Butler's novel has gotten a lot of attention, my father even saw a review. I read something in the Madison paper over the weekend about Butler formerly being a poetry writing coffee roaster. That article was talking about this.
Missing You by Harlan Coben. Some sort of conspiracy, murder, lost love novel.
Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi. Woman marries guy. They have dark skinned baby. Guy was black passing as white in 1953. Things happen. Helen has long hair and is English.
Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett. Another Discworld novel with a steam engine. Pratchett has a SciFiGuy beard.
Cairo Affair by Olen Steinhauer. Steinhauer writes some fine spy thrillers. This one is mainly set in Cairo.
NYPD RED 2 by James Patterson Literary Prodcuts, Amalgamated and Marshall Karp.
Kill Fee by Owen Laukkanen. Crime novel. With a name by Laukkanen I wonder if her spends all his spare time in a sauna.

Wrath of the Savage by Charles G. West. Indians kidnap two women during a raid through several homesteads. Army officer Bret Hollister sets out on their trail.
Graveyard of Memories by Barry Eisler. John Rain in 1972 as he learns to become a murderer for hire. I'll read this.
Weight of Blood by Laura McHugh. Murder mystery in the rural Ozarks. Teen girl looks to find out what happened to her murdered pal. Looks pretty decent.
The Accident by Chris Pavone. Some thriller about rich and famous people being revealed as goons. Author photo is in a restaurant. Nina Subin took the photo. According to Subin's website she takes a lot of author photos. I've read books by only two of the ones listed on the site. I've no idea who Ana Marie Cox is but she's good looking.
Runner by Patrick Lee. We have two of these. I hate when I order duplicates by mistake. That's okay. People will read the book. Ex-soldier encoutners 12-year-old on the run from a secret government prison. Lee's author photo is by Henry Stampfel. Maybe Stampfel is this guy.
Thirty Girls by Susan Minot. "Literary tour de force set against the haunting canvas of war-torn Africa." 30 teen girls kidnapped y Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. Minot's author photo is black and white. Not unlike The Hives.
Bread and Butter by Michelle Wildgen. Three brothers have competing restaurants in a small town. "A dazzling, brilliantly observed novel of food and siblings." Wildgen has a professional portrait shot for her author photo - like the people above. Wildgen attended Madison. Most author bios list the writer's current hometown or state. Wildgen's does not. Since Wildgen does a ton of food writing I'm betting she secretly lives somewhere like Minot. I presume the Northern Plains are not a hot bed of culinary activity and she has to hide this.
While Beauty Slept by Elizabeth Blackwell. The cover dsign says, "Vampires." The dust cover says, "[Sleeping Beauty's maid]." Blackwell's author photo is kinda small. Heidi Jo Brady took the picture. Runner by Patrick Lee. We have two of these. I hate when I order duplicates by mistake. That's okay. People will read the book. Ex-soldier encoutners 12-year-old on the run from a secret government prison. Lee's author photo is by Henry Stampfel. Maybe Stampfel is this guy.
Thirty Girls by Susan Minot. "Literary tour de force set against the haunting canvas of war-torn Africa." 30 teen girls kidnapped y Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. Minot's author photo is black and white. Not unlike The Hives.
Bread and Butter by Michelle Wildgen. Three brothers have competing restaurants in a small town. "A dazzling, brilliantly observed novel of food and siblings." Wildgen has a professional portrait shot for her author photo - like the people above. Wildgen attended Madison. Most author bios list the writer's current hometown or state. Wildgen's does not. Since Wildgen does a ton of food writing I'm betting she secretly lives somewhere like Minot. I presume the Northern Plains are not a hot bed of culinary activity and she has to hide this.
While Beauty Slept by Elizabeth Blackwell. The cover dsign says, "Vampires." The dust cover says, "[Sleeping Beauty's maid]." Blackwell's author photo is kinda small. Heidi Jo Brady took the picture. The Chase by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg. Evanovich and Goldberg's second novel with spies or assassins or something. Goldberg found some extra copies at Costco of their first book, The Heist, if you'd like one.

The Order from Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3. Years ago I read about Barney, probably in The New Yorker, and Barney's artwork. Barney made several films that sounded fascinating but I doubt many museum in the country hosted a viewing. The films sounded bizarre and fascinating.
I would periodically search for DVD (and VHS copies more years back) copies of the film series but could not find any reasonably priced copies. I did a search last week on Amazon.com and this came up for about $35. Of course now, with the internet, you can watch the whole series online. I'm behind the times, man.
Hilarious by Louis C.K. I'm behind ordering this, too. The copyright is 2011. But, people will still enjoy watching. I won't bother trying to find a profanity free video clip.
