I would take more photos but I feel like "creepy, old guy" when standing on the sidewalk with a camera.

Erotic Chaos

Fiction

Mammoth Book of the Best of Best New Erotica edited by Maxim Jakubowski. "A selection of 30 outstanding stories from the leading writers of the past 20 years."  That Grey stuff has been checking out so you may as well read this one.  Several years ago I read Jakubowski's novel It's You That I Want to Kiss but I do not remember what it was about..

Brink of Chaos by Tim Lahaye and Craig Parshall.  The flyleaf's plot description is very confusing.  This is part of the The End series featuring character Joshua Jordan.

The Godforsaken Mad Madame of Philadelphia

DVD

Godforsaken starring [Dutch].  Teen boy hooks up with nutjob crook and they go on a killing spree in Hollamd while wearing wooden shoes.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: season 6 starring [people].  Five dirtbags in Philadelphia cause mayhem and drink a lot.  A funny sitcom.  Interesting note:  The character named Dee is often ridiculed by other characters for being ugly or weird looking.  One of her regular tormenters is played by that actress's real-life husband.  I find that humorous.

Murder!

Mad Madame Lalaurie: New Orleans' most famous murderess revealed by Victoria Cosner Love and Lorelei Shannon.  A customer asked me to search the catalog for this one.  No one in our library system owns it but it looked interesting enough for me to purchase.  The charming society matron Lalaurie beat and murdered several slaves.

Must You Critique Author Photos? Yes, I Must.

Fiction

Severe Clear by Stuart Woods.  Stone Barrington does something in an airplane.  Author phot looks to be taken in a restaurant.  Photo is by Harry Benson who HOLY-MOLY! took these Beatles photos!

Low Pressure by Sandra Brown.  A thriller.  Brown's photo completely covers the back cover.  That means she is a Big Deal.  Probably because lots of people enjoy her books.  Author photo by Andrew Eccles.  Go to Eccles's obscurities section for shots of chimpanzees and nudes.  And nude chimpanzees.

Winter of the World by Ken Follett.  "Book Two of the Century Trilogy."  Follett got a haircut.  Remember those 1980s author photos with the bouffant?  A relative of his, Barbara Follett, took his author photo.

Hiss and Hers by M.C. Beaton.  Agatha Raisin.  M.C. Beaton is also a Big Deal, not that you could tell by the tiny black-and-white shot inside the flyleaf.  Heck, the photo does not even receive an author credit.

Large Print

Robert B. Parker's Fool Me Twice by Michael Brandman.  Parker has returned from the grave, inhabited Brandmand, and written a Jesse Stone novel.

Bones Are Forever by Kathy Reichs. No they are not.

The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. Sounds like the title to a John Irving novel.

Severe Clear by Stuart Woods.

Zeltersman Wanted Stardust

Fiction

Monster: a novel of Frankenstein by Dave Zeltersman.  I've read many nice comments about this.  Bill Crider says it is a "whiz bang" version of the tale.

Stardust by Carla Stewart.  Gal in East Texas buries her cheating husband and buys a rundown motel.  Cover is very bright and cheerful which, to me, is incongruous with the neon sign in the background and the title.

A Wanted Man by Lee Child.  Let me guess...Reach is traveling, Reacher meets people, Reacher gets into trouble, Reacher punches people, Reacher finds a Steyr GB, Reacher has sex, Reacher catches the bad guys and hits the bricks, you and I eat up every word.

NonFiction

The Long Walk: A story of war and the life that follows by Brian Castner. Memoir of explosive ordinance disposal guy  in Iraq.  That cover sure looks familiar.

Seven

One
Argo: how the CIA and Hollywood pulled off the most audacious rescue in history by Antonio Mendez and Matt Baglio.  Ben Affleck directed the movie so you can probably read the book faster than watch the flick.

Two
Dog Stars by Peter Heller.  The flyleaf says, "riveting, powerful, against all odds, grace, dead, abandoned, misanthrope, sneaks, transmissions, deep, beyond, risking, fuel, narrated, savagely, talking."

Three
Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers.  Soldiers are buddies since basic training and fight insurgents and reality in Iraq. EDIT: someone Googled there way here.  I did the same search and found this author interview of C-SPAN: http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/AuthorK

Four
Bridesmaid by Beverly Lewis.  The cover illustration says "Amish girl is lonely."

Five
Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon.  The flyleaf says, "The great American novel we have been waiting for."  I say, "What nitwit wrote the flyleaf?"

Six
Delusion in Death by JD Robb.  These in death.  Titles in death.  Write in death.  Themselves in death.

Seven
A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry.  William Monk is in charge of the River Police.  I hope this is better than that awful Pittsburgh river cop movie with Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Monk at Death's Door

Fiction

Mr. Monk is a Mess by Lee Goldberg.  I was slow on buying this one.  I thought we already owned a copy.  What's the deal with Goldberg on this series?  I cannot recall if he has one or two books left to write.  I also won't bother to find out.

Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures by Emma Straub.  Some sort of novel.  Girl from Door County becomes Hollywood star in the '20s.  What's the deal with Straub?  Were her parents ever living in Milwaukee when she grew up?  She went to UW for an MFA.  Her short story collection Other People We Married is worth your time.

Time Keeper by Mitch Albom.  Another inspirational story.  What's the deal with Albom?  Are his sports columns as sappy as his books?

Edge of Nowhere by Elizabeth George.  Girl can hear thoughts and flees from her criminal stepdad to an island in Washington state.  What's the deal with George?  I keep getting her confused with another author named George from Wisconsin.

Tumbleweeds by Leila Meacham.  Orphan ends up in Texas Panhandle and makes friends with football stars.  They meet again 40 years later.  What's the deal with Meacham?  Her bio says San Antonion but there is not mention of her favorite Tex-Mex place.

Black List by Brad Thor.  U.S. spy ends up on U.S. death list. What's the deal with Thor?  Does he carry around a hammer or not?

The Tombs by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry.  What the deal with Cussler?  Do his co-authors get to drive any vehicles from Cussler's car collection?

Silver: return to Treasure Island by Andrew Motion.  This got great reviews.  Son of Jim Hawkins and daughter of Long John Silver return to Treasure Island for remaining treasure.  What's the deal with Motion?  He was the UK's poet laureate, does that mean he drinks a lot?

Trust Your Eyes by Linwood Barclay.  Housebound schizophrenic thinks he sees a murder in Google Street View.  What's the deal with Barclay?  Was he really at Bouchercon, or did I drink too much free Dewar's?

Zoo by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge.  What's with Ledwidge?  He doesn't even get his picture on the dust jacket.

Death's Door by James R. Benn.  Another entry in the great WWII mystery series by Benn.  What's the deal with Benn?  Did he work at a public or academic library?  I do not recall.

Doctor Who: Shada: the lost adventure by Douglas Adams by Gareth Roberts.  What's the deal with Adams?  There is no deal, he's been dead since 2001.

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin.  Big selling book about gal and another gal.  What's the deal with Giffin?  Did she choose the photographer? Because her author photo is excellent.

Bin Laden Barns

NonFiction

No Easy Day: the autobiography of a Navy SEAL by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer.  Sailor who helped kill Bib Laden and now has Pentagon and SOCOM made at him.  Lots of diagrams of the assault.

Barns of Wisconsin by Jerry Apps.  Barns.

Wondrous Return of Bill Crider and Charlie Stella

Charlie Stella

Rough Riders by Charlie Stella.  Crook working as FBI informant to bust heroin ring running to North Dakota. Crook teams with an Air Force Colonel to smuggle in dope from Afghanistan.  Ignore Stella's self-deprecation and modesty over his writing skill; he puts out some great novels.

Bill Crider

Murder of a Beauty Shop Queen by Bill Crider.  More murder in Blacklin County. Someone should make a gazetteer of the County and put it online.  I'm not sure if people count the Sheriff Dan Rhodes books count as "cozies" or not.  (A cozy is a murder mystery with barely any blood and little to no cursing and lots of Dr. Pepper.)

Other, Lesser Arrivals

Orchardist by Amanda Copland.  The Pacific Northwest in 1900 and a solitary orchard owner, William, takes in two pregnant teenagers.  This had a big, fancy review so I ordered it.

Bones Are Forever by Kathy Reichs.  More murder investigation.  I placed a hold on this title for someone yesterday.  This series entry is set in Montreal. I really enjoyed my visit to Montreal.  I've written on here before how after my trip there my wife and I were going to move there.  I was only half-kidding about the move.  I therefore dislike Reichs out of spite.

A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry.  Popular Perry produces piddling pablum.  Well, not really.  I hear Perry writes neat stuff but that alliteration just came to me.

Last to Die by Tess Gerritsen.  Gerritsen seems like a nice lady.  I watched a couple episodes of the TV version of this series.  The automated spelling check does not like Gerritsen's name.

NonFiction

The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House by Edward Klein.  I often skip many political books because so many are flash in the pan and gone in a month.  I've been focusinG on buying more since people like to read them.

Visiting Tom: a man, a highway, and the road to roughneck grace by Michael Perry.  Perry is running out of things to write about with books on pigs, chickens, trucks and neighbors.  Up next is 250 pages on hair dryers.  Perry is an exceptionally good speaker and well worth your time to drive and listen to.  We have a couple of his performances on CD.  Plus his band on CD.

Trickster's Point by William Kent Krueger.  Cork O'Connor is set-up as the murderer of his pal, the future Governor of Minnesota.

Black Mask Stories edited by Otto Penzler.  7 hours on 6 CDs.  More crime fiction from the '30s.  Or '20s. Or whatever.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  19 hours on 15 CDs.  Flynn's other two novels were quite good.

The Stand by Stephen King.  47.83 hours on 37 CDs.  The big dog of post-apocolyptic books.

I Am Back From Vacation. Here Are Some Books.

Fiction

Inn at Rose Harbor by Debbie Macomber.  We drove to central Kansas.

The St. Zita Society by Ruth Rendell.  I mostly stayed in Lindsborg but we did go a few places.  Like the Star Wars display here.

Large Print

Sneaky Pie for President by Rita Mae Brown.  Isn't this cat dead yet?

Last Victim by Karen Robards.   I read a Scott Phillips crime novel, The Adjustment, set in 1946 Wichita while in Kansas.

Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood.  I ate some shaved ice.  The six-year-old took at least 10 minutes to decide on a flavor.  I am not exaggerating on the time.

Back Fire by Catherine Coulter.  My wife and I had some beer at lunch.

Creole Belle by James Lee Burke.  There were five dogs at my in-laws house since my sister-in-law dropped off three of her dogs during their vacation.

Megan Abbott Returns

Fiction

Dare Me by Megan Abbott.  Abbott's latest novel on high school cheerleaders, their new cheer coach, and a suicide has gotten a lot of press.  Dare Me has been plugged by Oprah, several major newspapers, Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine, and prominent writers.  Abbott does good work and now the zeitgeist has attacked!

Politics, Divorce, PTSD, Sean Doolittle

Fiction

Lake Country by Sean Doolittle.  I like the cover.  Guy kidnaps daughter of man who fell sleep while driving and killed Guy's friend.  Kidnapper takes daughter into Minnesota lake country and the kidnapper's buddy goes after him to stop things from getting worse.  I read Doolittle's Safer and liked it.  Barbara Fister really liked this book.

NonFiction

Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce: 4th edition by Emily Doskow. Someone had a divorce related reference question recently.  I checked our resources and noticed we needed to update a few titles.

Cowards: what politicians, radicals, and the media refuse to say by Glenn Beck.  Political commentary. Some people hate him.  Some people love him.  Some people drink coffee and watch Sponge Bob.

Hotels, Hospitals and Jails by Anthony Swofford.  Swofford hit it big with Jarhead, let his life go off the rails, tried to rebuild his relationship with his father.  He did a video promo.

Oh, hey, I just ran across this as well which is Swofford reading an excerpt from a visit to Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Audio Books on CD

Heartbroken by Lisa Unger.  11 CDs at 13.38 hours.  "Tense, mesmerizing novel about the limits of dysfunctional families, of an island haunted by dark memories and restless ghosts, and of the all-too-real demons we must battle."

Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.  12 CDs at 14 hours.  Some gal flees her wedding with a rude guy.
