Cranberry Bread (for Me), Sarah Palin (for You)

Cranberry Bread

Carolyn made cranberry bread.

Coffee

I made coffee.

Music CDs

I Told You I Was Freaky by Flight of the Conchords. Kiwis sings songs. I watched part of an episode of their show. It was boring. Stephanie the Library Assistant said she likes the show.

Southern Voice by Tim McGraw. Guy in hat and white t-shirt sings songs.

Kiss and Tell by Selena Gomez. Disney Channel "tweener" sings songs.

Ghost Written Fiction

The Wrecker by Clive Cussler and Justin Scott. Cussler is admirable in giving the other guy credit.

I, Alex Cross by James Patterson. Patterson is also good about giving ghost writers credit. But, no one else is listed on the cover or the LOC cataloging info so I suppose he did this one himself.

Ghost Written NonFiction

Going Rogue: an American life by Sarah Palin. What's the deal with her former son-in-law to-be? That guy's behavior has been sleazy. I thought about being "snarky" and listing this under Ghost Written Fiction. Hey, it is a political memoir after all.

AudioBooks on CD

Last Song by Nichols Sparks. 11 CDs at 12 hours. Yuch.

A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve. 8 CDs at 9 hours. My first reaction is "Yuch." Hhowever, the novel is set in Africa and Mount Kenya so my second reaction is, "Eh."

Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. 14 Cds at 17.5 hours. I tell my kids, "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all." I should follow my own advice.

Musical Interlude

More people should try out Teddy Thompson. We have three of his CDs.

The like the full band version better but could not embed it.

What to Read 32: Interview with J.A. Konrath

I spoke to JA Konrath at the Murder and Mayhem in Muskego meeting this past Saturday. Konrath spoke about electronic publishing, writing instruction, publishing, Han Solo, and made fun of Barry Eisler.

I was going to do a photo essay

Photographing, editing the photos, uploading the photos and then linking to them takes way too much time and trouble.

DVD

Star Trek starring Winona Ryder, Eric Bana.

Transformers: revenge of the fallen starring that guy and the current It Girl.

Audiobook on CD

Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud. 11 CDs at 13.5 hours. A Young Adult novel with legends, House of Svein, stumpy and swarthy hero, "chain of events that will forever alter his destiny."

Maybe I should get a new coffee machine

The current coffee machine overflows if the coffee pot is not all the way in.

It is very annoying. Here is an example:

Music CD

Play On
by Carrie Underwood. Pretty girl wears flower in hair for photo shoot.

AudioBooks on CD

Bloody Crown of Conan
by Robert E. Howard. 15 CDs at 18.5 hours. Three Conan tales by the inventor of the sword and sorcery genre. Just don't watch the biopic about Howard with Zellweger and the chubby guy from Law and Order.

Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. 9 CDs at 11 hours. Werewolves, paranormal, swords, lions, Atlanta, Midnight Games, dark plot, shape-shifting.

Dark Slayer
by Christine Feehan. 12 discs, 14.5 hours. Hot chick in a kinky leather outfit travels with a wolf pack and kills vampires with a crossbow. All she really wants is love.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Volume 1 (6 CDs at 6 hours) and Volume 2 (6 CDs at 6 hours) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes. You may have heard of him before. Read by the guy who played Watson in those fantastic productions starring Jeremy Brett.

The Heir by Johanna Lindsey. Rich Scottish dude is supposed to marry one woman but loves another.

Critical Conditions
by Stephen White. 10 CDs at 12.33 hours. Doctor finds that a family with sick kids "stop at nothing to save one of its own."

Large Print

Kindred in Death
by J.D. Robb.

Precious
by Sandra Novack. Family is falling apart in 1978.

This Should Be More Interesting Than That Previous Post

One Novel

Under the Dome by Stephen King. Boy, oh boy is this book bloated. 1072 pages. No description on the flyleaf, I suppose people are just supposed to buy his book no matter what.

AudioBooks on CD

The Amateurs by Marcus Sakey. 8 CDs at 9 Hours 45 minutes. I read a Sakey book and liked it. I even spoke about it on camera. Four friends commit a victimless crime but screw up and leave a victim. For four people pushed to the ragged edge, the only thing more dangerous than the men chasing them might be their best friends.

Nobody Move by Denis Johnson. 4 CDs at 4.5 hours. The back cover has little story description. Embezzlement and lowlifes. Read by Will Patton who does real good narration for the Dave Robicheaux series.

Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan. 9 CDs at 10.5 hours. "Percy Jackson isn't expecting freshman orientation to be any fun. But when a mysterious mortal acquaintance appears on campus, followed by demon cheerleaders, things quickly move from bad to worse...full of humor and heart-pounding action." Shelved in the YA section.

Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. 9 CDs, 11 hours. Same as above.

Razor Sharp by Fern Michaels. 6 CDs at 7 hours. Something about the Sisterhood and politicians screwing hookers.

Skin Trade by Laurell Hamilton. 15 Cds at 18.5 hours worth of vampires and werewolves having sex or something. I guess they kill each other too. This is set in Las Vegas so maybe they screw and kill showgirls or vacationers. Let me know.

Musical Interlude

Large Print

Lakeshore Christmas by Susan Wiggs. Prim Librarian Maureen Davenport is finally getting her chance to direct Avalon's annual holiday pageant...former child star Eddie Haven can't stand Christmas, but a court order from a judge has landed him right in the middle of the merrymaking as Maureen's co-director....spar over every detail...troubled kids...distinctly untraditional...sabotage...trying too hard...to...the...the...of...and..love.
Prim librarian? Great. Just great.

13 1/2 by Nevada Barr. A new character by Barr. Polly lives in New Orleans and is hot for an architect while a recently released murderer does something and a tarot card reader spells doom.

Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls. This hit the bestseller list. Maybe not that list.

No Time to Wave Goodbye by Jacquelyn Mitchard. Mitchard was in the Madison paper a few weeks ago for an article about cosmetic surgery. I was going to post a link and found this instead: ARTICLE: A phrase in last week's cover story on cosmetic treatments incorrectly identified Jackie Mitchard as a "fan of cosmetic surgery." She is a fan of cosmetic treatments, including Botox injectables.

Rough Country by John Sandford. My wife tells me that whenever the main character, Virgil Flowers, is mentioned by a character in Sandford's Prey books he is always called, "that fucking Flowers."

Unhallowed Ground by Heather Graham. Boy that actress with the same name sure is a hot looking broad, huh? The character Graham played in Bowfinger was supposed to be a take-off on Anne Heche who was supposedly screwing her way up the Hollywood ladder. Steve Martin used to date Heche until Heche came out of the closet as a crazy person.

Santa in a Stetson by Janet Dailey. Sing with me again, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care.

What I Sent in for the Lake Mills Main Street Newsletter.

I'm not sure when the newsletter comes out. I need to send over some photos to go with this.

Lake Mills Main Street has worked hard to bring new businesses and visitors downtown. New and old businesses have drawn together to encourage more people to visit downtown Lake Mills. But, among all the current businesses is one you may often overlook.

The L.D. Fargo Public Library has been a downtown fixture in Lake Mills since its grand opening in October, 1902. Except for a major fire in the winter of 1980, the Library has been in continuous operation for 107 years. Through the years the Library’s popularity has weathered multiple challenges, including motion pictures, radio, mail-order book clubs, television and – yes – the internet.

In fact, the Library’s popularity and usage increases every year. In 2008, more than 1000,000 items were checked out or renewed. The library hosted almost 200 programs for children and adults with a total attendance of 5,525 people. Attendance for the Summer Reading Program events has outgrown the Library’s meeting room, and are now held in the City Hall’s Community Room.

Over the Library’s 107 years of business our customers’ interests and service demands have constantly changed. Twenty years ago, libraries focused mainly on books and magazines, with an increasing range of VHS titles. Today, DVD titles and public internet access are a big draw. (Not to mention the over 1200 VHS tapes that still – still! – circulate.) However, contrary to some popular misconceptions, the printed page is alive and well. Book borrowing is still the leading reason people use the Library. Circulation is strong and children’s books and adult fiction dominate the list of check-outs.

Electronic gadgets such as cell phones, video games, and the internet may get more attention than books, but do not forget the importance of literacy. Learning many new skills is still dependent on reading. Pleasure reading is the surest way to encourage more reading. More reading leads to stronger literacy skills and better reading comprehension and communication skills. Better reading comprehension and communication skills lead to greater success in school and work.

The link between reading and school success highlights the vital importance of LD Fargo’s children’s collection and children’s services. The Library’s weekly story times, Summer Reading Program, and various after school and special event programs bring everyone from infants to teenagers into the Library. The Children’s Librarian regularly visits local 4K, pre-school, and daycare facilities for story times, and organizes and collects “book boxes” to help support and advance their curriculums by putting books directly into the hands of kids.

Need more incentive to come to the library? Look at the numbers: the average price of a pre-school picture book is $18.97. Consider that families will check-out anywhere from one to 20+ picture books at a time. How about adult fiction? If you’re buying new books every month then STOP! An adult novel goes for about $22 on average. Yeah you’ll find heavy discounts on books by popular novelists, but checkouts are free at LD Fargo.

“But, I don’t want to get on a waiting list for that book.” Okay, but do you realize the Library gives you access to about 1 million books? Yes, really. LD Fargo’s membership in the three county Mid Wisconsin Federated Library System (MWFLS) gives you access to the SHARE online catalog. SHARE allows access to all 27 libraries in MWFLS, plus the 26 member libraries in the Lakeshores Library System in Racine and Walworth counties. That’s 53 different libraries sharing resources of almost a million items. Place a hold online through the Library’s webpage or with the help of library staff, and you will almost always have your item in a couple days.

How is all this paid for? Okay, it’s not really free. The cost for Library services is carried by you and me, of course. The Library receives funding from two main sources: the city of Lake Mills and Jefferson County. The city collects local taxes and the county provides reimbursement for services to rural residents. Smaller amounts of funding come from MWFLS (including some state and federal funds) and various fines and fees charged by the Library.

Don’t use the excuse, “I’m too busy” to cheat yourself from enjoying a good book. Reading is an escape from the hectic pace of daily life. Skip a night of boring channel flipping on television shows, pick up a book. Re-read a favorite author, or share one of your childhood favorites with your own children. Pick up a short stack of novels and try each one out. If a book does not click with you, then set it aside and start another. If that fails, get a DVD.

LD Fargo is open from 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday and 9 AM to 5 PM on Friday and Saturday. If can make a virtual trip to the Library too. Visit our webpage at www.lakemills.lib.wi.us. See the list of all the new adult books and DVDs at lakemillslibrary.blogspot.com. Hear about some recommended books on our award winning YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/ldfargolibrary.

Variety: John Keegan, Danielle Steel, Scientist Biography

NonFiction

The Strangest Man: the hidden life of Paul Dirac, Mystic of the Atom by Graham Farmelo. Dirac was awarded the 1933 Nobel Prize in physics when he was only 31 years old. I saw a review for this book and mentioned to The Old Man. The Old Man asks, "Are you going to buy it?" Well, yeah, I guess so.

The American Civil War by John Keegan. Keegan takes on the Civil War. I guess he ran out of European wars to write about. Keegan does some great writing and analysis so this should be good.

S.W.A.T. Magazine, December, 2009 issue. A gun magazine we subscribe to. The covers are almost always the same. The only month-to-month differences among cover photos are the guy and the rifle he is holding. This one has two dudes on the cover with one guy aiming a FN SCAR carbine. This cover also shares a commonality among most covers in that the cops on the front are from Arizona - where the editor lives. CORRECTION: The guys on the cover are from Alabama.
Read this magazine with caution; you'll just be saddened about all the firearms you cannot afford.

Fiction

Scarpetta Factor by Patricia Cornwell. I think I read one of her books.

The Epoch Point by Spencer Zimmerman. Robert Davis is a young Airman fresh out of Air Force basic training who, after being held captive in China, suddenly finds himself unraveling the most immense conspiracy in history. International intrigue, hidden histories, the active hand of God, etc.

Blood Game by Iris Johansen. Johansen lives near Atlanta. I'm too lazy to read the front coverleaf so I read the back.

Audio on CD

Blue Smoke and Murder by Elizabeth Lowell. 9 CDs at 10 hours. A river guide gets involved with art thieves and calls for help from an investigative agency that owes her a favor.

Southern Lights by Danielle Steel [Hah! I hope the ghost writer gets good money.]

A Legacy Through Time by Debbie Fritter. Romance novel by local author.

Zombies!, Young Adult and Large Print

Zombies!

The Zombie Survival Guide: recorded attacks by Max Brooks. Selected zombie outbreaks from 60,000 BC to 1992 at the Joshua Tree National Park. I really need to buy a good AR15 and stock up on ammo.

Girl Music on CD

Crazy Love by Michael Buble. I'm not curious enough to find out how to put the accent mark on the "e" in his name.

Young Adult

Ruined: a novel by Paula Morris. Your favorite Teen motifs: Teenage girl with absent parents. New Orleans. Creepy house. Tarot reading aunt. Cemeteries. Prep School snobs. Best friend is a ghost. Wrong that must be righted.
Morris is from New Zealand and teaches writing at Tulane ( I wonder if she knows future Nobel Laureate Victor Gischler?). Did I ever mention my fondness for Lion Red beer?

Flora's Dare by Ysabeau S. Wilce. I read the description but have no still have no idea what the heck this is about. I don't know where Wilce is from but she lives in Chicago. Have I ever mentioned my fondness for Goose Island beer?

How to Not Be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler. Hell, that's easy, act like Gerard Saylor.

Large Print

The Professional by Robert B. Parker. Another Spenser novel. Crider will be happy. The regular print version has a big map of Boston on the inside cover so I assume Spenser travels around the city a lot in this one.

Ladies of the Lake by Haywood Smith. Another one of those "Do this or you do not get your inheritance" novels.

Vela Jean Learns to Drive by Jennifer Nevin. "It is a poignant story of a spirited young girl growing up in the gold-mining and moonshining South". Did I mention I just checked out two books on distilling and moonshining?

Hot Pursuit by Suzanne Brockmann. NYC bodyguard is protecting an Assemblywoman when an old murder case gets intertwined. "Suzanne Brockman is widely recognized as a leading voice in romantic suspense." What a coincidence, Gerard Saylor is unrecognized as a trailing voice in online snarkiness.

Acts of Mercy by Mariah Stewart. Serial killer novel with religious overtones.

Case of the Missing Servant by Tarquin Hall. "Meet Vish Puri - India's most private investigator. Portly, persistent, and unmistakably Punjabi, he has the exacting nature of Hercule Poirot and the provincial appeal of Precious Ramotswe."

Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji. Teenager in 1973 Tehran hangs out on the roof and lusts for his neighbor before attracting the wrong attention of the secret police.

The Professional by Robert B. Parker. Another Spenser novel.

The Perfect Christmas by Debbie Macomber. A perfect Christmas? You mean you ask for something and people don't say, "I'm not buying you any gun stuff!" or "Don't you have enough knives already?"

What to Read 31: Books on Sex

The American Library Association's annual Banned Books Week reminded me that I was going to do a book talk about books on sex. The topic covers so many different areas that I decided to limit myself to mostly non-fiction titles and grouped them together under subjects of my own devising.

Titles include:

Marvel Romance by Stan Lee, et al

Decorative Painting Techniques for Walls, Floors, Ceilings and Furniture by Elise C. Kinkead and Gail E. McCauley. For people more ambitious than I am. We had a carpenter install two new doors at our house. On our old house the front door took a lot of time to do and I am so glad I did not try to do it myself.

More Fiction: Tasha and Tamera Alexander, Johnny D. Boggs, Jeff Lindsay

Fiction

Never Love a Lawman by Jo Goodman. Beautiful newcomer to Reidsville, CO must marry the local sheriff to claim her inheritance of the local railway.

Rio Chama by Johnny D. Boggs. Gunfighter Britton Wade takes on the challenge to transport a priest lynching condemned man to the gallows. But, the condemned man's father is the wealthy and powerful Senator Cole and the Senator does not want his son to hang. I read Boggs' Spur Award winner Camp Ford, it was good.

Dexter by Design by Jeff Lindsay. I've never seen the television series but have really enjoyed the books. The third book in the series, preceding this one, diverted from the usual storyline and involved demon possession. This fourth novel is back again to Dexter's usual problems of trying hard pass as a normal person while still following his hobby of murder.

The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Sequel to Atwood's Oryx and Crake and set in a post-apocalyptic land.

The Inheritance by Tamera Alexander. Inspirational romance. All these inspirational titles have the same cover designs. There will be a demurely dressed, pretty gal in her early to mid-twenties in the front and a rugged but handsome dude in the background. Both figures are outdoors in a field or the mountains or both.

Beyond This Moment by Tamera Alexander. A different series with the same dang cover style.

Tears of Pearl by Tasha Alexander. Newlyweds Lady Emily and Colin Hargreaves are honeymooning in Constantinople when a harem girl is murdered. A local diplomat recognizes the victim as his daughter, who was kidnapped twenty years earlier, and Emily and Colin promise to investigate. Alexander was at last year's Murder and Mayhem in Muskego (and also scheduled for this year's) and her books sounded interesting. I bought this one since her other book we have A Fatal Waltz circ'ed well.

Rough Country by John Sandford. The usual.

Evil for Evil by James R. Benn. Another World War Two mystery by Benn featuring former Boston policeman Billy Boyle. Boyle is sent to Northern Ireland to track down some missing BARs that the IRA plans to use in an uprising and maybe ally themselves with the Axis. This is a good series, I recommended it before.

Red's Hot Honky-Tonk Bar by Pamela Morsi. Fortysomething Red is suddenly the guardian of two grandkids she barely knows. How will she mix the kids into her late-nights, bar owning lifestyle, and boy-toy boyfriend?

The Siege by Stephen White. Children of the Sec. of the Army and a Supreme Court Justice are captive inside the Skull and Bones building.

Stardust by Joseph Kanon. 1945 Hollywood where a returned veteran does not believe his successful movie-making brother killed himself.

Blood Safari by Deon Meyer. Emma sees a picture of her brother on the evening news as a murder suspect. But, her brother disappeared 20 years earlier in South Africa's Kruger National Park. Emma makes some inquiries and is attacked, so she hires a personal security guy and goes searching.

That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo. I don't care enough to read the description.

All the Dead Voices by Declan Hughes. Dublin private investigator investigates. This series has been popular here.

The Puzzle King by Betsy Carter. Woman works to rescue her relatives from 1936 Germany.

Why Fish Fart: and other useless or gross information about the world by Francesca Gould. Including: where can you find "the mound of ears", why do skunks stink, which infection causes bleeding from the eyes.

Arguing with Idiots: how to stop small minds and big government by Glenn Beck. I've only seen this guy for about five minutes worth of television but he seems to be a real tool.

Lord of the Rings: weapons and warfare by Chris Smith, Forewaord by Christopher Lee. A replacement for our worn-out copy.

Those Reissued Beatles CDs. Fogerty, Cornell Hurd.

The Beatles Remasters (in order of how stacked on my desk)

Abbey Road by The Beatles.

Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles.

Beatles for Sale by The Beatles.

Rubber Soul by The Beatles.

Let It Be by The Beatles.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.

With the Bealtes by The Beatles.

CDs

American Shadows: the songs of Moon Mullican by the Cornell Hurd Band. I was looking at a Bob Wills CD and remembered Bill Crider mentioning the Cornell Hurd Band. I think Hurd plays a kind of Texas Swing and honky-tonk. Although Crider's main reason for mentioning the band is probably that his son does sound work for them.

The Blue Ridge Rangers by John Fogerty. I presume he complains about politics on this one too.

Joy by Phish. I don't smoke marijuana so I have never heard their music.

Four Large Print Novels

Large Print

Fragment by Warren Fahy. The library barcode is right on top of the author's name and now his last name looks like "Fart".

The Shortest Distance Between Two Women by Kris Radish. Crappy cover. I'm guessing this is a best-friends-forever novel and not a women-being-mean-to-each-other novel.

Vanished by Joseph Finder. Some thriller.

Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner. The library barcode is right on top of this author's name and makes it look like "penis". Just kidding.

Two Sex Books with Victor Gischler

Fiction

Vampire a Go-Go by Victor Gischler. The latest from the writer of Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse. The back of the book says little about the plot. Something about werewolves, alchemists and gun-toting Jesuits. None of that matters because every on of Gischler's books have been quite good. He always has a good bit of humor within a quickly moving story. So try it out.

The Spire by Richard North Patterson. Mark Darrow grew up poor but brilliant. A local college prof mentored Darrow who became a "superb trial lawyer". Darrow is asked to be the college President and finds that a murder case from when Darrow was a student there may have resulted in a wrong conviction.

Green by Ted Dekker. Thriller of some kind. Something about a guy falling asleep and waking up two thousand years later in a new Eden split by the Green and the Black Forest.

Enchanted Dreams: erotic tales of the supernatural by Nancy Madore. Our other Madore book, Enchanted Again, checks out pretty well so I ordered this one. Seven stories.
Random page:
As I was settling into the warm, sudsy water of Vincent's bathtub, there came a tap on the bathroom door.

"Yes?"

The door slipped open a few inches, "Would you like more wine?"

"I would, and company, too, if you care to stay," I heard myself responding. The warm water and wine were having their effect.

He closed the lid of the toilet and sat down there.

"How old are you?" I asked him.

"Eighty-five." he said with a smug smile. He look like a man in his early thirties.

"Still in your prime," I murmured. He laughed.

"Is it true vampires live forever?" I asked.
Vampires? O crap, not again.

NonFiction

Domestic Sex Goddess by Kate Taylor. Some sex themed nonfiction goes out and some doesn't. There is no telling. Nina Hartley's Guide to Total Sex and Confessions of a Naughty Mommy checked out okay. But, Secrets of the Sexually Satisfied Women has done twice as well. Some things never check out. Like Staying Safe: a teen's guide to sexually transmitted diseases, we've had that for four years and it has never left the shelf. This one shows boobs and buttocks.

Large Print

Even Money by Felix Frances and Dick Frances.

Intervention by Robin Cook.

92 Pacific Boulevard by Debbie Macomber.

Two DVDs, Three Picture Books, Four CDs, Six Open Windows

DVD

Extreme Rules 2009 starring [lots of wrestler dudes]. The back cover says that Big Show weighs in at 485 pounds! Hokey smokes!

Suerveillance starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond. Two FBI agents assisting in a murder case have to detangle three varying eyewitness stories.

Music CDs

Back From the Dead by Spinal Tap. New songs and old songs. Do you think anyone ever tries that old joke with Christopher Guest, "Do you have any naked pictures of your wife? Want to buy some?"

Lotusflow3r by Prince. This actually three discs: Elixer by Bria Valente, Lotusflow3r by Prince, and MPLSound by Prince.

Lines, Vines and Trying Times by The Jonas Brothers. As I said in the bat video, I would have bought this sooner but I thought we already had it. I've heard portions of that Paranoid song and liked what I heard. I have not yet heard the full thing. I still like the Kinks best anyway.

Sunny Side Up by Paolo Nutini. Scottish guy with Italian name with strumming acoustic guitars.

Picture Books

Stretch by Doreen Cronin and Scott Menchin. Subject headings are: 1. Stories in rhyme. 2. Stretching exercises - Fiction.

What Really Happened to Humpty? by Jeanie Franz Ransom and Stephen Axelsen. From the LOC cataloging info: Detective Joe Dumpty rushes to investigate the mysterious circumstances under which his older brother, Humpty, fell from a wall on his first day as captain of the new Neighborhood Watch program. Where is Sheriff Rhodes when you need him? He's coming up for election you know.

Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Cynthia Rylant and Gustaf Tenggren. I just read Mr. Monk Goes to Germany where Monk and his assistant go to the Lohr region of Germany from where the fairy tale originated.

NonFiction

Unmasked: the final years of Michael Jackson by Ian Halperin. I heard a radio interview with Halperin. Halperin intended an expose on Jackson that would give final proof of Jackson's guilt as a pedophile. Instead, Halperin became convinced of Jackson's innocence of all sex allegations. Halperin did find out Jackson was gay and weird and in DANGER! from drug abuse.
Post-death updates to the book seem to have been very rushed. The picture captions are incomplete and resultingly bizarre.

The Secret Sentry: the untold story of the National Security Agency by Matthew M. Aid. The history of the super-secret NSA from it's post-war inception to today's mission of protecting us from DANGER!

Crazy Library Customer

A story from Stephanie about a crazy lady who came in a year or two ago. More stories as they become available.

In reference to a couple comments I have had on the nature of this video: One of the great things about Libraries, and there are many, is that anyone can come and use the Library. Libraries get the whole of society including the homeless, mentally ill, socially tactless, and generally clueless. They are all welcome. But, sometimes, bizarre and inappropriate behavior is part of the package. This incident occurred in the center of the Library in front of staff and several customers.

Remembering this incident is not intended to belittle the lady but to laugh about the situation and the whole event. My intent was not to mock a someone with a mental illness. The customer is entirely welcome to return and use the Library.

Four Large Print Novels

All our large print novels are bought on two subscription services from Gale/Cengage and Center Point Large Print. I don't actually select the titles.

Large Print

Storm Cycle by Iris and Roy Johansen. Computer genius Rachel tries to rescue archeologist John who is trapped in an Egyptian tomb. John may have discovered a secret to cure Rachel's dying sister.

Loving a Lost Lord by Mary Jo Putney. Opening to a random page: "Not yet." The cook eyed her severely. "You never mentioned that you had a husband."

Hello Goodbye by Emily Chenowith. Abby travels to northern New Hampshire with her parents in the summer. Her mother has just been diagnosed with malignant brain tumor and visitors come to see her mom for the last time.

Below Zero by C.J. Box. Box's novels are supposed to be quite good. Sheriff Joe Pickett's oldest daughter Sherry is convinced that Pickett's foster daughter survived a massacre and has been calling on the telephone.

CJ Box is confirmed to attend the Murder and Mayhem in Muskego conference on Nov 14, '09. The conference line-up for this year looks great. Well, the list looks great to me because I have read several of the authors. Heck, I already signed up.
