Billy Boyle and a Stack of Large Print

Rag and Bone: a Billy Boyle World War Two Mystery. Neat mystery series set in WWII with Boyle as a special investigator for his uncle, General Eisenhower. Boyle is in London investigating the murder of a Russian general who was murdered using the exact methods the Russians used to massacre Polish soldiers at the Katyn Forest.
I plugged these novels before.

Field of Spears: the last mission of the Jordan Crew by Gregory Hadley. True story of a B-29 crew shot down over Japan on July 20, 1945. Written by an American now living in Japan and teaching at Niigata University.
This was donated by a guy who lives around the corner from me. He came in to donate the book and mentioned he was shot down and in the book. I asked, "Where were you shot down?" He replies, "Over Japan." I was surprised he was still alive.

Murder in the Air by Bill Crider. A Sheriff Dan Rhodes mystery. I do not know what the plot is. That doesn't matter, I'll read it anyway. I suppose wild hogs will be mentioned.
Cemetery Road by Gar Anthony Haywood. Handy returns to Los Angeles to attend his old friend's funeral. Handy thinks his pal's death is connected to a robbery they pulled 26 years ago.
Scarlet Nights by Jude Deveraux. A popular author.
Hangman by Faye Kellerman. Do all the Kellerman's ever get together and try to mix all their lead characters together?
Burn by Nevada Barr. An Anna Pigeon novel but with Pigeon on leave from the Park Service and visiting a friend in New Orleans.
Wolf's Bluff by W.D. Gagliani. Homicide cop - and werewolf - Nick Lupo has battled other werewolves before, killers who unlike Nick have no problem hunting human prey. So when a new series of savage animal attacks the area, Nick already has a suspect in mind...as he begins his surveillance, someone else is out there, watching them both. Someone with a very deadly plan. Someone who knows just what it takes to kill a werewolf.
I've spoken to Gagliani a couple times. He is a good dude.

Lies the Government Told You: myth, power, and deception in American history by Judge Andrew P. Napolitano. I never heard of Napolitano before I saw him on BookTV getting interviewed by Ralph Nader. Napolitano is a frequent guest on FOX News and leans to libertarianism. He lists 17 lies in his book, including: Judges are like umpires, We are winning the war on drugs, America has a free market, The Constitution applies in good times and in bad times.

I'm listening to 6PR which is a talk radio station in Perth, Western Australia. They are currently discussing drinking problems in Perth. Coincidentally, they read a news item a few minutes ago about a guy who was at a Perth nightclub when his face was struck with a glass or bottle. The guy's arteries and veins were cut and he ended up with 80 stitches on his face.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson. Yep. I'm late on ordering this.
The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle. Third novel about Irishman Henry Smart. Former IRA hitman Henry is in California's Monument Valley in 1946 and ends up working with movie director John Ford. Sent back to Ireland in 1951 to work on another film Henry ends up settling there.

Faithful Place by Tana French. Popular author of thrillers. In 1985 Dublin teen aged Frank and Rosie are going to run away to London. When Rosie never shows Frank figures he got dumped and heads out alone. 22 years later Rosie's old suitcase is found hidden behind a a fireplace in an old house and Frank is headed back home "whether he likes it or not."
The Whisperers by John Connolly. I cannot keep John Connolly and John Connelly straight. This is the Irish one.
Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith. If you have trouble keeping Smith's series apart this is the African one.

Barry Eisler, Part One

The Big Bang!: the best of the MC5 by The MC5. From the booklet:
The West Coast was another story altogether. For the hippies, we were a big problem. West Coast hippie music had a gentleness; it was a goofy, "la-la" kind of electrified folk music that they all seemed to identify with. Bands like the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, and Quicksilver [Messenger Service], The Youngbloods, et al., represented mass-marketed peace-and-flower-power crap. Here come the MC5, from Detroit, with our sequined stage outfits and 100-watt Marshall stacks blasting. We just couldn't connect out West with our leaping, spinning, knee-dropping stage show, ranting and raving about gun-toting politics and "Kicking out the jams, motherfuckers!" We opened a free concert in Golden Gate park with a balls-out version of "Tutti-Frutti." The crowd stood there transfixed, dumbstruck. We thought it was great.
Hot Rats by Frank Zappa. No one else in the system has this album and I think it should check-out well.

Hot Tub Time Machine starring John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Crispin Glover, others. Middle-aged guys drink too much and end up in 1986.
The White Ribbon starring [Germans]. German village in pre-World War One has "strange accidents" and then more bad things happen. I think. I have not seen the picture.

War by Sebastian Junger. Junger spent a year of on-and-off living with an airborne unit on a mountain in Afghanistan. Boredom, boredom, boredom, boredom, SHOOTING!, boredom, boredom, boredom, boredom, boredom.
Medium Raw: a bloody valentine to the world of food and the people who cook by Anthony Bourdain.
Spoken From the Heart by Laura Bush. I screwed up on this one. I never heard of the book until I saw it listed on the bestseller list.
Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories edited by Sarah A. Larsen and Jennifer M. Miller. Book version of the public television series. Extensive interviews with Badger veterans of the Vietnam War. There is a guy in town who was a Radar Officer on one of the destroyers during the Gulf Of Tonkin incident. Local guy Scott, the guy with the dog, mentioned that the correct answer on the SAT question on the Tonkin is that the whole thing was made up. Radar Officer guy says, "Baloney, I was there."

People Their Places and Things: 50 more tales from Lake Mills, 2010 by Roland Liebenow, M.D. We have one copy to check out. A second copy in reference. A third copy hidden away if some weaselly jerk steals the first two copies. Thieving weasels.

What a combo: Stella's "Johnny Porno" and Cox's "Supersex"
Fiction
Johnny Porno by Charlie Stella. 1973 New York City and unemployed John Albano is collecting mob receipts for illegal showings of Deep Throat. The newly nicknamed Johnny Porno has to deal with a vengeful ex-cop, a crazy ex-wife, and an angry mobster's nephew. Getting this dang novel took forever. First, I had to wait for publication. Second, the novel took forever to ship. Third, getting the book cataloged took forever. Stella does good work.
Spies of the Balkans by Alan Furst. Furst also does good work. Spy novel set in World War Two.
Whiplash by Catherine Coulter. How many novels a year feature cover photos or illustrations of D.C. landmarks like the White House, Capitol Building and various memorials?
Crossing Oceans by Gina Holmes. Single mom with terminal illness returns home to try and find a permanent home for her young daughter. Daughter's father understandably shocked when he finds out he has a daughter.
Lowcountry Summer by Dorothy Benton Frank. Sequel to Plantation.
Our Red Hot Romance is Leaving Me Blue by Dixie Cash. When I was selecting (picking out books to purchase) I looked up this author in our catalog. The only other novel of Cash's that the library has is from 2005 but has checked out 33 freaking times! That is a lot for a small place like this.
Frankenstein: Lost Souls by Dean Koontz. What, no dogs?
That Perfect Someone by Johanna Lindsey. Shirtless guys from paperback romances sure have started to sneak onto hardcovers like this one. I first mistyped shirtless as shortless. Maybe that will be the next trend.

Year of the Black Rainbow by Coheed and Cambria. This band seems to have a strong following. If you attend one of their concerts make sure you don't stand next to Richard Christie.
Brothers by The Black Keys. Endorsed by Bill Crider.
North Mississippi All Stars. We don't have a new album by the North Mississippi guys but the The Black Keys remind me of them.
Exile on Main St. by Th Rolling Stones. Remaster of the famous double album with extra tracks included. We have a book about the chaotic making of the album, Exile on Main Street: a season in hell with the Rolling Stones by Robert Greenfield. I have not read the book but Artie Lange said it is quite interesting.
Little Steven has been playing Plundered My Soul every weekend on his show.

Forty-something single mom gets laid off, wakes up with a younger man after her daughter's wedding, and has to decide if her life is really just about working for a paycheck. DeBerry wrote a letter to Library Journal that sold me on buying this novel.

Personal Defense for Women by Gila Hayes. Avoiding conflict, defense techniques, fight back with non lethal tools, use a firearm with confidence. The author owns Firearms Academy of Seattle. I looked at their web page a few years ago and was impressed with their large range.
How to Draw from Photographs by Diane Cardaci. Learn how to create beautiful, lifelike drawings from your own photographs. Draw your dog. Or, draw my dog and all it's shedding fur that covers the floor at home.
The Political Zoo by Michael Savage. An older book but I had a customer request. I also pre-ordered the author's upcoming book which releases this fall.
Rough Guide to Paris by Ruth Blackmore and James McConnachie. With photos of summertime fun and pleasantness. As if it never snows or rains in Paris.
The Essential First Year by Penelope Leach. Planning, feeding, kicking, sleeping, etc. This is a DK book so you know it is pretty darn decent.
151 Ways to Help Your Child Have a Great Day at School by Robin McClure. #79: Eat lunch with your child at least once a month.

Lucas apprenticed to old-time gangster Bumpy Johnson and took over heroin distribution in the 1960s and through the 1970s. Why are there no photographs? It should be illegal to write a biography without photographs.
Silk Parachute by John McPhee. 10 nonfiction pieces by the great writer. Including stories on the U.S. Open and learning canoeing as a kid.

A Slew of Fiction, a Collaborative Crider, and a Brief Commentary
Brief Commentary
Is there really such a thing as "summer fiction"? There is a summertime movie season but do publishers release books as summer blockbusters? This time of year you see multiple comments about beach books and summer reading lists but do reading patterns change that much during the season? Is it all a marketing method to keep people reading and buying books during the summer?
It seems like people would read less during the summer because of the nice weather and long days. The only people I see as "summer readers" are people whose work patterns change in the summer to allow them more time, like teachers and students. Other people, like farmers, have less time.
Don't get me started on "beach reads". Quick and easy fiction is always around and I much prefer to travel with a paperback than a new hardcover.
Fiction
The Nearest Exit by Olen Steinhauer. What's the deal with this guy? His books are supposed to be really well done and he hit the NYT bestseller list. So why have I never heard of him? This novel is an international spy thriller.
The Outside Boy by Jeanine Cummings. Young boy Christopher is an Irish tinker in 1959 Ireland. Tinkers are gypsies and when Christopher's his family settles down for Christopher and his brother to get schooling and first Communion they are still considered outsiders.
Skin by Mo Hayder. Here is another author I've been meaning to get to. Hayder writes some horror style thrillers set in the UK. Police diver Flea and cop Jack investigate rash of suicides connected to a "nearly bottomless network of flooded quarries just outside the city".
Nashville Noir: a Murder, She Wrote mystery by Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain. I very much doubt this is traditionally "noir-y", I presume it is a cozy. Who owns the rights to the name Jessica Fletcher? The book is printed with an NBC logo but they use Angela Lansbury's image on the cover. Plus they credit the series creators. It sounds like a licensing and royalties nightmare.
Predator by Terri Blackstock.
Mississippi Vivian by Bill Crider and Clyde Wilson. Wilson was a famous private investigator in Houston. The flyleaf says Crider has written more than fifty novels. He must have written those before the Internet took all his time.
Rolling Thunder by Chris Grabenstein. Another John Ceepak mystery set in the New Jersey shore town of Sea Haven. Fun mysteries.
Snow Angels by James Thompson. Mystery set in Lapland above the Arctic Circle. This one sounds really good.
The Big Bang by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins. This is an interesting title because Collins has a big brain. Seriously, the guy's head is filled with all sorts of interesting information and stories.
The Book of Spies by Gayle Lynds. CIA has rare books expert Eva Blake help identify and find a secret library from Ivan the Terrible.
Black Blade Blues by J.A. Pitts. Another of those modern day vampires, dragons, tattoos, swords, etc. novels that my wife enjoys.
Morning's Refrain by Tracie Peterson. Flutist engages in romance.
Death Echo by Elizabeth Lowell. "A novel of suspense".
Never Let You Go by Erin Healy. Fantasy elements with Lexi. "Lexi is losing it. The husband who deserted her is back in town, wanting to see their daughter Molly. Her sister's shameless murderer is up for parole. An unsavory old friend is demanding payment for debts that Lexi knows nothing about."
The Story Between Them by Molly O'Keefe. Paperback romance.
Little Bee by Chris Cleave.
Losing Charlotte by Heather Clay.
Infamous by Ace Atkins. I read an Atkins book once and it was really good. This is a historical novel of George "Machine Gun" Kelly and his nutso wife who wanted him to be a famous crook.
The Passage by Justin Cronin. 766 page novel of apocalypse.

Human Bones!
Human Bones!
Aztalan State Park, just to the East of Lake Mills, has been studied for years. About 100 years ago excavated human bones were thought to be from cannibalism. Cannibalism! The eating of human flesh! Boiled heads!
Anthropologist/Archeologist Katie Rudolph, a recent UW-Milwaukee grad, says the bones are the result of warfare, not cannibalism or zombies. Will this make tours more or less interesting to Cub Scouts? Ms. Rudolph gave a presentation on her findings to the Friends of Aztalan Park on March 13th. She did a good job. Watch her presentation below.

Six Novels and One Customer Service Guide
Fiction
Through the Cracks by Barbara Fister. Chicago Private Investigator takes on case of rape victim. The man convicted for the rape 20 years was exonerated and the victim wants the real rapist caught.
Lets look at the author bio...Barbara Fister lives in rural Minnesota, where she works as a librarian at a small liberal arts college. Hmm. That sounds familiar. But,
1) It's not really all that rural (30,000 people).
2) Library? That sounds familiar, too.
3) College? Does the inside of the window still grow a sheet of ice in the winter?
Sleepless by Charlie Huston. Huston's previous novel was nominated for several awards. A plague of insomnia has spread around the world. LAPD undercover cop suffers the disease and is charged with stopping the illegal trade in the one drug that can bring sleep.
Procession of the Dead by Darren Shan. An adult novel by the uber-popular Young Adult novelist.
Junkyard Dogs by Craig McDonald. McDonald is another guy with good reviews and award nominations. He is also another writer I have not yet gotten to. Sheriff Longmire gets involved in a modern Wyoming range war between a junkyard and a would be land developer.
So Cold the River by Michael Koryta. That's a tough name for me to type. Filmmaker Eric Shaw is hired to produce biography of a rich millionaire. Shaw travels to the former resort town of the rich man. Staying at a recently renovated mineral springs resort Shaw starts to experience hallucinations.
Bodily Harm by Robert Dugoni. The cover makes this look like a thriller. It is. Attorney David Sloane is told that the medical malpractice case Sloane just won is an error. The real culprit is a toy company's faulty product. When Sloane visits the toy designer's apartment he finds the place ransacked and the designer missing.

So Cold the River by Michael Koryta. That's a tough name for me to type. Filmmaker Eric Shaw is hired to produce biography of a rich millionaire. Shaw travels to the former resort town of the rich man. Staying at a recently renovated mineral springs resort Shaw starts to experience hallucinations.
Bodily Harm by Robert Dugoni. The cover makes this look like a thriller. It is. Attorney David Sloane is told that the medical malpractice case Sloane just won is an error. The real culprit is a toy company's faulty product. When Sloane visits the toy designer's apartment he finds the place ransacked and the designer missing.

It's Entertainment by Celtic Thunder. Concert DVD from five guys. Are they really all Irish? This was a donation and after checking circs on other items from these guys I figured the DVD would check out.
Hell, any music item with the word "Celtic" in it will check out. I could record myself getting drunk at a karaoke bar singing Thin Lizzy and U2 songs in a bad accent and release a DVD.
Burn Notice: Season Three starring Bruce Campbell, and some really thin people. But, not Bruce Campbell. That guy is now chubby-chub-chubs.
Glee: Season One, Volume One: The road to sectionals starring [Actors]. Just fast forward to the slutty cheerleader parts and skip past the awful renditions of pop songs.
Five Minutes of Heaven starring Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt. Eleven year old boy witnesses his older teenage brother murdered by the IRA. Thirty years later the killer is released from prison and the two are scheduled to meet on television show. Things happen.

Invictus starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. I'll bet you most anything that college rugby players sit around drinking beer and watching this movie on the weekends. I'll assume this picture did well in NZ, except for that last game of course. Australians, outside of Queensland, probably did not give damn. Fijians must have liked it. Who I am missing? The Limeys?
I bought an All Blacks necktie as a gift for my father when I was in Auckland in '92.

Glee: the music, volume 3, showstoppers by [Singing Actors]. Bill Crider is still hoping for an ABBA themed episode. My wife likes this show a lot. I made sure to viciously mock the Madonna themed episode.

The Gun Digest Book of the AK and SKS by Patrick Sweeney. "A complete guide to guns, gear and ammunition." Once again I call bullshit on anything proclaiming to be a complete guide.
However, I do like this book. There is a lengthy piece on the Czech Vz. 58 which is neat rifle. I'd like to get one but CZ-USA's list price on the semi-auto version is $1015. That would still be about $800 out the door. At least I still have a PCR. Which reminds me, I need to look up my score from the shooting event this past Sunday. I started out lousy but improved on each stage.

He was outside this morning and pulled some chives from the garden to eat. He even ate the flowers. He really smelled like onions. Later on, I was reading a Magic Tree House novel to him and inserting phrases like, "Eating chives makes you smell like onions." He would say, "No, read it properly!"

Smith Center is only 80 miles from Kearney, NE (pop. 27431). 99 miles from Grand Island, NE (pop. 42940). Hays, KS (pop. 20,000) is just 90 miles away. Salina (pop. 46,000) is only 99 miles away.
Incidentally, if you're ever riding your Honda Nighthawk from Lindsborg, KS to Cheyenne, WY and the master link on your chain falls off in Western Kansas, you can get towed over to Colby. While there you can:
1. borrow some tools from the mechanic,
2. walk next door to the tractor supply,
3. find a master link to a chainsaw,
4. spend 30 minutes in the sun wrestling the new master link onto the motorcycle chain,
5. drive to the nearest Honda dealer for the correct master link,
6. watch the bike mechanic take all of five minutes to put the new link on,
7. drive into Colorado,
8. stop for gas in Eastern Colorado,
9. have the bike not start,
10. realize the battery is dead,

Coppola: a pediatric surgeon in Iraq by Dr. Chris Coppola. This has to be a heartbreaking story what with all the war injuries to children.

Finn and company have a new album coming out. Due to the goofy, staggered release dates for the U.K., the U.S., and the South Seas the album will not be on sale here until July.
I'm probably the only one here interested. Aren't I? Except, maybe, the blog reader in Dunedin. Who I am blatantly calling attention to in an effort to maintain "readership". Oh, look, they're hiring a page.
Apparently the band appeared on Later with Jools Holland recently.

I did find a bowl to catch the drip from the second leak, underneath the bathroom sink, from the leaking water valve. The valve that sprays out water when I turn it closed.

Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard. Another Pickard story set in Kansas so maybe I will read it. The author lives in Merriam, KS. Which is just another way of saying Kansas City.
Innocent by Scott Turow. Bald lawyer writes book.
Shoot to Thrill by P.J. Tracy. "A monkeewrench novel." Written by a mother and daughter team. Do they have sex scenes in their books? How do they collaborate on that topic?
Private Life by Jane Smiley. Isn't Smiley kind of "literary"? I read Moo and thought it was funny.
Hannah's List by Debbie Macomber. What is that tune I'm hearing? Can you hear it? I don't care, I don't care, I don't care.

Lords of the Ring by Doug Moe. The University of Wisconsin had one of the best NCAA boxing teams and won numerous team and individual championships. Until April, 1960 when Badger boxer Charlie Mohr was killed from punch in the ring in the NCAA title bout. Shortly after Mohr's death the NCAA eliminated boxing from competition. Moe follows the tale by speaking to former Badger boxers, coaches, and even Mohr's surgeon. Article from 1960.
