Limping Through Life: a farm boy's polio memoir by Jerry Apps.  Apps contracted polio when he was 12-years-old.  How that changed his life and led him to writing.  Page 73 says, "Pa bought me a bicycle so I could ride the four and a half miles to town and the four and a half miles back each day and he wouldn't have to drive me there and back."
