Guesses At What I Missed While I Was Deathly Ill, Battling Against A Vicious Bacterial Invasionn

DVD

Leatherheads starring George Clooney. Clooney plays tackle football in Northern Minnesota.

Bush's War. A Frontline documentary. Four-and-a-half hours of Frontline's coverage of six years worth of year. Policy changes, mistakes, misperceptions, and political battles.

Torchwood: the complete second season. My wife watches this show. Something about a bi-sexual space captain who battles aliens with the help of Dr. Who.

Baby Mama starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. A career woman hires a surrogate to carry her child. The surrogate turns out to be an idiot from Philadelphia.

Heroes: Season Two. Season two of the television version of X-Men. Oops.

Redbelt starring the great Joe Mantegna and Ricky Jay, written and directed by David Mamet. A Jiu-Jitsu master who has always focused on his self-defense studio becomes a prizefighter to pay off massive debts.
Since this is a Mamet picture the cast includes Rebecca Pigeon and Ricky Jay. I do not often watch DVD extras but for Mamet's Spartan I listened to the voiceover by Val Kilmer. Kilmer made much fun of Mamet.

Street Kings starring Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie. LAPD officer is implicated in murder of fellow officer. Hugh Laurie plays a hard-ass. I'd like to see this, too bad it is checked-out.

In Bruges starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes. Dark comedy with two hired killers stuck in small town Belgium trying to lay low.

Office: season four starring [people].

Starship Troopers 3: marauder starring Casper van Dien, Jolene Blalock, Amanda Donohue. Did you know there was a Starship Troopers 2? It was awful. This one brings back the creator and lead actor from the 1997 picture.

CD

A Piece of What You Need by Teddy Thompson. I like this guy's stuff. Give a listen. If you do as well check out his other two albums Separate Ways and Upfront & Down Low.

Forgiven by Los Lonely Boys. Texas styled guitar rock.

Costello Music by The Fratellis. I do not know. Investigate.

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too by Martha Wainwright. The woman is a genius.

First of Four for Knitting, Plus Another Sniper Book

Fiction

Too Many Curses by A. Lee Martinez. Margle the Horrendous transforms his enemies into accursed forms and sticks them in a dungeon. Margle's castle is tended by Nessy, a short, furry and sensible kubold. When Margle dies Nessy has trouble keeping things squared away.
I've read three of Martinez'z books and enjoyed them all. He writes humorous fantasy and science fiction. I enjoyed Gil's All Fright Diner and In the Company of Ogres the most. He populates his work with not quite competent protagonists with even less competent helpers in battles against evil. Fun stuff.

NonFiction

Vogue Knitting: the ultimate sock book by the editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine. Knitting has been popular and when I mentioned to a customer at check-out how I needed to get more knitting books she said, "Yes. You do." So I did. Three more titles are in the wings and will be on the shelves shortly.

Shyness: how normal behavior became a sickness by Christopher Lane. "How a handful of psychiatrists, with the help of the pharmaceutical industry, turned the ordinary emotion of shyness into an illness...Christopher Lnae unearths the disturbing truth: with little scientific justification and sometimes hilariously improbable rationales, hundreds of conditions - including shyness - are now defined as psychiatric disorders and considered treatable with drugs."

Loose Girl: a memoir of promiscuity by Kerry Cohen. Cohen eleven years old and the lonely girl of recently divorced parents when she found that her body and sexuality gained her attention. She started trading sex for love. Now a psychotherapist, Cohen recognizes her behavior as a common trait among many women.

Bar Flower: my decadent destructive days and nights as a Tokyo nightclub hostess by Lea Jacobson. Jacobson was an East Asian Studies major who moved to Japan. She was fired from her job as an English teacher and took a job as a nightclub hostess. Anglo hostesses are in high demand at Tokyo nightclubs and the free booze and freely told lies to her customers started had Jacobson "descending into self-abuse and alcoholism, she found that the seductive lifestyle she loved so much seemed impossible to escape."

Ernie: the autobiography by Ernest Borgnine. Marty, From Here to Eternity, The Dirty Dozen, Bad Day at Black Rock, Ice Station Zebra, McHale's Navy. Ernie is 91 years old and still working with voiceovers for SpongeBob Square Pants and a guest part on the Simpsons. "A fascinating memoir - filled with secrets, well-remembered details, and never-before-told stories - of a star who has thrived in the changing world of Hollywood for more than half a century."

Sniping

Sniper One: on scope and under siege with a sniper team in Iraq by Sgt. Dan Mills. Mills deployed with the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment to Al-Amarah, Iraq in 2004. Mills' sniper platoon was attacked within hours. 120 degree weather, failed sewers, garbage piles everywhere and bullets headed the wrong way.
We have a lot of sniper related bios and autobios set in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the sniper books check out I decided to get this one too. Nice photo sections included. Mills served with Johnson Beharry who was awarded the Victoria Cross for action on March 18, 2005.

All Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder: Volume One by Frank Miller and Jim Lee. Apparently Robin has a dark and violent personal history as an orphan just like Batman.

Six Fiction, One DVD, One AudioBook

More CD and DVD

DVD

Shine a Light with the Rolling Stones. Band clips, behind the scenes, concert footage.

Doomsday starring Bob Hoskins and a bunch of chicks. An "elite fighting unit" goes into a "post-apocalyptic zone" to find a cure to an epidemic. Sounds like Escape From New York. That's alright, I grew up on trashy post-apocalypse movies on television and like most all of them. Especially when they have goofy costumes, elaborate mohawks, overdone make-up.

Nim's Island starring Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin. Girl and dad live alone on a desert island. When dad disappears girl emails favorite author for help. Huh? Well that makes no sense to me but this is a kids' movie.

Dexter: the second season starring Michael C. Hall and James Remar. Season two of the Showtime television series. I bet James Remar was in a post-apocalypse movie sometime in his career.

Music CDs

Wait for Me by The Pigeon Detectives. Here is another one of those, "Why did I get this?" albums. I think I may have read a promo release, or heard it on 6 Music.
Oh. I've heard the tune I Found Out before. It's a catchy little ditty.
Wait, I may have heard this on Little Steven's show.

Handy Manny with Los Lobos. Songs from the animated kids' series that Boy #1 loves to watch.

Number One Songs by Merle Haggard. This will get good check-outs. Ten songs.

Kidz Bop 14.

The M26 Pershing Heavy Tank did get made but only "saw action" in the Pacific Theater.

Snakes: a concise guide to nature's perfect predators by Daniel Gilpin. Perfect? If snakes were so perfect they would hunt day and night and not have to sit in the sun to stay warm. They'd also be able to run.

Detox: the process of cleansing and restoration by Parragon Publishing. A mixture of recipes and therapies with nice colour photos of fruit, vegetables and upscale white women.

Beers of the World: over 350 classic beers, lagers, ales, and porters by David Kenning. We have some other beer books already but I could not resist. Organized by country with each beer entry containing photo, historical information, and tasting notes. HEY! Swan Draught! I used to drink Swan when I attended Murdoch for a semester. Swan brewed an Export that was good and I used to get their stought as well. Oh, and Emu! I forgot about that one until I read the wikipedia article.

Bitter Ocean: the Battle of the Atlantic, 1939-1945 by David Fairbank White. Between '39 and '45 36,000 Allied sailors and navy airmen and 36,000 merchant seaman died on the seas in convoys delivering all the materials (food, clothes, guns, ammunition) needed to wage the war in Europe and Africa. 80% of German submarines crewman were lost.

CD and DVD

CD

Viva LaVida: or, Death and all his friends by Coldplay. I'm not sure what's going on here. These guys are still popular according to sales lists. I think Stephanie the Library Assistant is a fan of theirs.

Real Animal by Alejandro Escovedo. Little Steven was playing Escovedo's latest tune on his radio show and the tune was quite catchy so I ordered this. Two other Escovedo albums are in the SHARE catalog.
Escovedo started out as a punk in San Francisco and has played in several genres since then.

Digi Snacks by RZA as Bobby Digital. My brother sent me a Wu-Tang Clan CD a few years ago. i don't know why it was chosen. I listened to it but do not remember much about it. The disc is sitting around somewhere, I should dig it out and listen again. From what I know the guys like old kung-fu movies, comic books, and Bill Murray.

The Slip by Nine Inch Nails. CD packaged with a live DVD by Trent Reznor. I don't know if this guy likes comic books. If he does the books probably have vampires or goth story lines.

Fire Songs by The Watson Twins. A few months ago I was checking in some CDs by one of our regular customers whose tastes sometimes coincide with mine. I listened to one of his returns by Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. I really liked that disc so when I saw the release announcement for this I ordered it.
