CD
Viva LaVida: or, Death and all his friends by Coldplay. I'm not sure what's going on here. These guys are still popular according to sales lists. I think Stephanie the Library Assistant is a fan of theirs.
Real Animal by Alejandro Escovedo. Little Steven was playing Escovedo's latest tune on his radio show and the tune was quite catchy so I ordered this. Two other Escovedo albums are in the SHARE catalog.
Escovedo started out as a punk in San Francisco and has played in several genres since then.
Digi Snacks by RZA as Bobby Digital. My brother sent me a Wu-Tang Clan CD a few years ago. i don't know why it was chosen. I listened to it but do not remember much about it. The disc is sitting around somewhere, I should dig it out and listen again. From what I know the guys like old kung-fu movies, comic books, and Bill Murray.
The Slip by Nine Inch Nails. CD packaged with a live DVD by Trent Reznor. I don't know if this guy likes comic books. If he does the books probably have vampires or goth story lines.
Fire Songs by The Watson Twins. A few months ago I was checking in some CDs by one of our regular customers whose tastes sometimes coincide with mine. I listened to one of his returns by Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. I really liked that disc so when I saw the release announcement for this I ordered it.
DVD
Hellboy starring [people from Hell]. Demon is raised from infancy by the U.S. Army and works for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense invesitagting and defending against paranormal events.
Shutter starring [people I never heard of]. Horror movie. Couple moves to Japan and image of girl starts showing up in their pictures.
NonFic DVD
Defensive Drills, Offesnive Drills, Hitting Mechanics from A Game Sports. Baseball drills for teaching young players.
Those I left Behind by Lisandro Perez-Ray. Documentary on families split between the U.S. and Cuba and unable to visit one another.
Beyond the Sea: a history of the Mariel boatlift by Lisandro Perez-Ray. 130,000 Cubans were sent over by Castro. Among the convicts and junkies were many who procliamed themselves gay, or drug addicts, or prostitutes to get to the U.S.
In Search of the Sentinel by Albert Paley. "one-hour documentary that follows the vision of the artist, from idea through fabrication and installation of the largest public sculpture on a university campus in the United States."
The Not So Big House: home by design by Sarah Susanka. Core design principles brought to life that emphasize quality over quantity.

Never Ending Stream of Large Print Because Rachel the Page Has Not Yet Learned CD and DVD Processing
Large Print
Silent Thunder by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen. Another one of those parent-sibling novels. According to the back cover Roy has an Edgar Award so I suppose he is no slouch.
Marine architect Hannah is supposed to help prepare an old Russian nuclear sub for museum exhibition in the U.S. Her assisting brother is killed after finding a strange message on the back of an electronic panel.
Ancient Highway by Brent Lott. Three generations of family in Los Angeles. The Texan who left home in the '20s for Hollywood. His young daughter in the '40s. The grandson in 1980.
Moon Shell Beach by Nancy Thayer. This is a chick book. Here is the evidence: 1) girls who grew up together on the beach. 2) a fractured childhood friendship. 3) acrimonious divorce sending a woman back home. 4) difficult forgiveness by one gal. 5) "powerful and deeply moving novel". 6) "evolution of a lifelong friendship, the power of forgiveness, and the reward of believing in miracles".
Foreign Body by Robin Cook. According to the cover illustration someone has a clamp left in their body. According to the back a med student's grandmother dies after a surgery in India and the med student investigates.
Sweet Love by Sarah Strohmeyer. "Brilliant Boston TV reporter Julie Mueller is struggling to raise a teenage daughter alone. She's given up on happiness - that is until she receives the gift of culinary classes for Mother's Day...buring desire for fellow student...[who] happens to the the love she let slip away."
How about a stupid, vapid TV reporter? Let's aim for some realism next time, Strohmeyer.
Say Goodbye by Lisa Gardner. This cover illustration says something about creepy bugs in a jar. The back says "FBI agent...pregnant hooker...horrifying...dead hookers...young agent...pregnant...lunatic who uses spiders...mother sister...victims of a serial killer...perfect murder...lethal web...psychopath."
Ten-Year Nap by Meg Wolitzer. Gal who quit high falutin' job to stay with kids hits 40 and worries she made wrong decision and discusses with her three pals.
Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton. Five young gals meet every Wednesday at a Palo Alto park in the late 1960's to share books. They form a writer's circle and experience the upheaval of the '60s and '70s.
In 1999 I went out to the Bay Area for a family get together. We used a rented Oldsmobile to go to Napa and that car's driver seat gave me a wicked awful back-ache. I also got sick with an inner ear infection that blossomed during the trip. The return flight to Kansas was atrocious. I think the Waitresses in the Sky were afraid to come near me I was so ill. I saw a doctor in Wichita and the prescribed antibiotics zapped the infection but it took me a month to fully recover.

Affordable Home Design: innovations and renovations by Martha Torres. I believe I mentioned once before that my kitchen is was not yet painted. It still isn't. This has some neat modern designs that Boy #1 at home would be impressed by.
Basement Ideas That Work: creative design solutions for your home by Peter Jeswald. Lots more neat photos.
I'll adjust the title by adding this subtitle: (unless you have a 120 year old house with weeping foundation walls and a 6' 2" ceiling height).
Drywall: professional techniques for great results, 3rd Edition by Myron R. Ferguson. The instructive illustrations are great. Covers tools, materials, hanging walls and ceilings, taping, sanding, angles, curves, arches, stress cracks, water damage and stains, sound control.
Pilates On the Ball: training core stability for a healthy body and mind by Gemma Wright. We have some other exercise ball book that does well so I got this one too.
Exercise Ball: fun, safe, and effective workouts with your Swiss Ball by Sara Rose. Same as above. I'll withhold comments about the illustrations. Ask me in person if you want my comments.
Speedweeks: 10 days at Daytona text by Sandra McKee. Photo book with ten days of racing for the Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series, qualifying and exhibitions.
San Francisco: city by the bay, 3rd edition photographs by Morton Beebe. Some donation.

CDs and two DVDs
CDs
I was wondering the other day about how long we (the Library) would be buying music on CD. I skimmed an article by David Byrne on the changing music industry and how record labels are becoming increasingly less important. Any musician can now record and mix their music using PC software and then do a small pressing of CDs or sell the content online. We'll see how it goes.
Around the Bend by Randy Travis. You may remember Randy Travis from the motion picture Black Dog.
Perfectly Clear by Jewel. Yodeling Alaskan sings a country tinged rock album.
No End in Sight: the very best of Foreigner by Foreigner. Two discs with a total of 32 songs. Not until I read the track listing did I realize how of their songs I can easily recall. Listen to this next spring and catch them at some county fair.
Superhero Brother by GS. Love and Special Sauce. We had another album by G. Love, Lemonade. The guy uses a stupid name but the blues music is neat - band bio.
Saints of Los Angeles by Motley Crue. There is a listing of current tour dates on the back of disc's slipcase. Is that a hint about the music's shelf life?
DVD
Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster starring [Frankenstein meets the what?]. The evil but beautiful Princess Macuzan and her bald, effeminate dwarf assistant nadir arrive in Puerto Rico to kidnap women to use in repopulating their dying planet. Meanwhile Frank, an American astronaut who is actually an android, crash-lands near the aliens. He becomes Frankenstein, a crazed killer with only half a face.
Bank Job starring Jason Statham. "Small time hoods" are asked to rob safety deposit boxes and are being used for more than they know. A heist movie. Well reviewed.

Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. This has a weirdly convoluted summary on the cover that I am not going to try and translate.
Broken Window by Jeffrey Deaver. A killer is data-mining to find victims to rape and kill and then pins the crimes on innocent fall guys. Everything goes swimmingly for the scumbad until Lincoln Rhyme's cousin becomes one of the fall guys.
Twisted Creek by Jodi Thomas. Allie inherits a small town Texas cafe and brings her grandmother along as cook. Allie's bad luck starts to turn when some unlikely people become her friends.
Blood Trail by C.J. Box. Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett investigates the murder of an elk hunter who was hung and gutted like the game he was after.
River of Heaven by Lee Martin. Sam Brady has led a solitary life ever since his boyhood friend died on the railroad tracks in 1955. When Sam's brother returns after years of self-exile Sam starts to reveal details of that day in '55.
Mercy Street by Mariah Stewart. Four high school seniors go into the woods in Pennsylvania. Two are killed and the other two are missing. A private detective and local cop work together on a case that"meanders down a twisted path that leads to an old unsolved murder - and justice for a killer with a heart of stone."
Say You're One of Them by Uwem Akpan. "Stunning stories humanize the perils of poverty and violence so piercingly that few readers will feel they've ever encountered Africa so immediately."
Commoner by John Burnham Schwartz. Commoner Haruko marries the Crown Prince of Japan in 1959. Haruko is scorned by the Court and only respected because she will bear the Prince an heir. Thirty years and one nervous breakdown later Haruko persuades another commoner girl to accept her son's marriage proposal.

Here's the NonFiction I Was Too Lazy to Carry Out With the Fiction
NonFiction
Ghost: confessions of a counterterrorism agent by Fred Burton. Burton was a member of the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) counterterror team. The DSS protects embassies and diplomats around the world and Burton was on the edge edge of the fight against terrorists.
Several years ago, when I was considering cop jobs, working for the DSS seemed like a real neat job to me. You could travel all over, live overseas, and get free ammo. Then I saw that the pay was horrendous. I don't think I was qualified anyway; if I remember correctly they were looking for people with prior experience.
Fleeced: [big long wordy subtitle] by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann. "In this ahrd-hitting call to arms Dick Morris and Eileen McGann reveal the hundreds of ways American taxpayers are routinely fleeced - by our own government."
Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black. "In more than two dozen essays that investigate everything between how Christians and Jews celebrate their holidays, to the politics of faith, to people's individual search for transcendence, Black explores his unique odyssey through religion and belief...the inconsistencies and peculiarities of religion [that infuriate] Black."
Fish Without A Doubt: the cook's essential companion by Rick Moonen and Roy Finamore.
Rome 1960: the Olympics that changed the world by David Maraniss. I heard Maraniss speak at the WI Library Association meeting in Green Bay last fall and he spoke about doing the research for this in Rome. Should be a neat book.
Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder by Vincent Bugliosi. Zoinks! What a title! "Bugliosi presents a tight, meticulously researched legal case that puts George W. Bush on trial in an American courtroom for the murder of nearly 4,000 American soldiers fighting the war in Iraq."
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris. Humorous true-life stories by Sedaris.

AudioBooks on CD

Not In the Flesh by Ruth Rendell. A truffle-hunting dog in in England digs up a body instead of a fungus. C.I. Wexford has to find out who was buried there and is surprised when a second body turns up.
The dog's owner should hire the dog out as a cadaver sniffing dog.
Nothing to Lose by Lee Child. Jack Reacher just wants a cup of coffee (like usual) in the middle-of-nowhere town named Despair. The locals are hostile (like usual) and Reacher gets in trouble (like usual). Reacher teams up wth a female cop (like usual) from the neighboring town named Hope. Reacher "goes up against a whole town...cracking open its terrifying agenda" (like usual).
You will read this and enjoy it (like usual) because (like usual) Child does a great job with his characters and story.
Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. The professorial exercise of "You are dying , what do you tell your students." becomes real for Pausch after he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. So, Rausch writes lecture, gets on television, writes a book, and doesn't die.
Just kidding. He still has cancer (in the later stages unfortunately) and the lecture Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams is supposed to be very inspiring and worth the attention it has received.
Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg Cabot. A talkative woman gets married and hitchhikes through the countryside in her wedding dress. (Plot deduced from title and cover image.)
Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross. Julia is freshly widowed and taking care of her husband Wesley's estate when Wesley's mistress shows up at the front door, announces dissatisfaction with Wesley's will, and deposits Wesley and the mistress's bastard child for Julia to care for. A comedy.
Plague Ship by Clive Cussler with Jack Du Brul. Who are we kidding? I have little doubt that Du Brul did all the heavy lifting here.
A spy ship comes across a cruise ship filled with dead people. The cruise ship sinks with one survivor and the spy ship captain is left to solve the mystery.
Sail by James Patterson and Howard Rougham. See my above comments about authorship.
A family in turmoil after hte father's death four years ago takes a sailing trip when disaster strikes and draws them together.

Crime Fiction and The Bible
Fiction
Wounded and the Slain by David Goodis. Another paperback from Hard Case Crime. A reprint from 1955. "Their marriage on teh rocks, James and Cora Bevan flew to Jamaica for a last chance at patching things up. But in the slulms of Kingston James found himself fighting for his life - while Cora found her own path to destruction, in the arms of another man."
Empty Ever After by Reed Farrel Coleman. Coleman has been awarded the Shamus, Barry, and Anthony awards for his novels. Coleman wrote the very good Hose Monkey under the pen name Tony Spinosa.
Demon of Dakar by Kjell Eriksson. Scandinavian noir and crime is quite rage these days. Swedish copper Ann Lindell and her assistants follow the clues from a trail of bodies back to the Dakar restaurant. Neither the restaurant owner and kitchen staff are above suspicion.
Yellow Medicine by Anthony Neil Smith. Fired from his Deputy job in Mississippi for "rule-bending and bribe-taking" Billy Lafitte lands on the tundra of rural Minnesota. Booze and girls occupy his spare time when a local band's girl bassist asks him to help out her boyfriend.
I've read several positive comments about this novel. The author is from Minnesota. I know some of you may take offense at that, but give him a try anyway. Besides, take pity on the guy, he works at Southwest MN State Univ. - he may as well be in Iowa.

Bruce Campbell! Futurama! Football!
DVD
Burn Notice: Season One starring BRUCE CAMPBELL and [important people]. Michael Westen (not played by Campbell) was fired and blacklisted from the spy community. He doubles as a private dick in Miami while trying to find out why.
The DVD case has him holding an older style Smith with the goofily squared trigger guard. But, the gun looks oddly photoshopped. Why is is that movie posters and DVD covers always have to add a gun to the cover? Gun equals action? If so why not have the actor pose with 0ne instead of clipping one in afterwards?
Giants: Road to XLII. Whoa...five discs worth football from last season. Games from Week 17 versus the Patriots, Wild Card Playoff versus the Buccaneers, Divisional Playoff versus the Cowboys, NFC Championship versus the Packers, Super Bowl XLII versus the Patriots.
Laurel and Hardy Collection starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Two discs with shorts and two feature films.
Beast with a Billion Backs starring Bender. "You'll gargle with fear!" The second feature length Futurama. Extras include David Cross eating popcorn, deleted scenes, storyboard, a brief history of Deathball.
Sheriff featuring Sheriff Ronald E. Hewitt of Brunswick County, North Carolina. Sheriff Hewitt works a "backwoods county" with crimes of murder, robbery, and lawn ornament theft. "At once brutal, bizarre, and funny, Sheriff employs the techniques of cinema verite: no interviews, no msic, no voice-overs. The result is an unexpected, intimate portrait of a complex man trying to do good in a bad world."
Vantage Point starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, others. The President is shot in Spain. Told from the vantage point (get it? vantage point?) of eight different characters.
Again, the cover has dudes - Quaid and Fox - and posing with pistols - Sigs. I remember reading that the Secret Service issues .357 Sig caliber. I'm not sure if that is correct though.

Gold Diggers by Tasmina Perry. Not a mystery. I'll have to fix this one. Sex with millionaires and billionaires in New York.
Dawn Patrol by Don Winslow. PI surfer in San Diego has a case. This is supposed to be really good, Booklist gave it a starred and highlighted review. That Crider fellow wrote about it. I didn't read his review because it looked like he would give the plot away.
Don't Tell A Soul by David Rosenfelt.

Favre!, Chinese Cinema!, 12 CD Variety Pack!
DVD
The Quarterbacks - Manning, Brady, Favre by NFL Films.
Come Drink With Me starring [Chinese actors you never heard of]. Golden Swallow is "sent to rescue a kidnapped official from a bandit clan." She teams up with a drunken mentor to help her. The first film to suspend actors from wires for spectacular fight sequences.
Music CDs
Jazz/Blues
Beautiful Day by Jazzamor. What the...? I ordered this? I remember the cover image, I'm sure it's good. Must be another one of those, "Allmusic.com talked me into it" discs.
No. I just checked allmusic and that is not why I bought it.
Night Train to Nashville by Tab Benoit. Louisiana blues musician. I got talked into trying this out by some nerds on the Spyderco forum. A live 2007 performance by Benoit in Nashville on occasion of his Blues Music Association award as Entertainer of the Year.
Country and Western
Troubador by George Straight. Popular guy.
Back When I Knew It All by Montgomery Gentry. These two dudes seem popular so I bought this latest disc.
Rock and Roll
Turbo Ocho by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Roots rock band from Tempe, AZ. Includes a DVD documenting their eight songs in eight days recording process. Website.
Attack & Release by the Black Keys. From Allmusic.com: "From Akron, OH, they play close-to-the-bone, raw blues-rock, the only instrumentation being Auerbach's guitar, Carney's drums, and the occasional organ. Auerbach had a fine, mature, lived-in blues voice for one so young, and the group's material worked in funk, soul, and rock influences from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and James Brown that avoided undue repetition of the overdone chord progressions and stock riffs common to so many such acts."
Total Dance : 2008 by Fergie, Ne-Yo, Hilary Duff, others. "The biggest collection of club hits! Continuously mixed by America's #1 DJ, DJ Skribble."
Skribble?
Blame it on Gravity by Old 97's. Latest disc from the Americana/Roots Rock band from Dallas. We also have a live CD of theirs, Alive and Wired. If you like this you can check out their gold-toothed leader's, Rhett Miller, solo albums.
Saturnalia by The Gutter Twins. The Gutter Twins are Greg "Fat Greg Dulli" Dulli (of the Afghan Whigs) and Makr Lanegan (of Screaming Trees). I figured I'd try it out
Stax 50th Anniversary Celebration with Booker T and the MGs, Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Johnnie Taylor and others. Two disc retrospective.
Sleep Through the Static by Jack Johnson.
Home Before Dark by Neil Diamond.

Three Music CDs: Raconteurs, Sex and the City Soundtrack, and Weezer
Music CDs
Consolers of the Lonely by The Raconteurs. We have the first album, Broken Boy Soldiers, so I figured I would get this second one. Broken Boy Soldiers circ'ed pretty well at 25 check-outs. That's good for a rock n roll CD here in Lake Mills.
I don't know if this is any good or not but a few nights ago PBS was re-playing an Austin City Limits performance by the Raconteurs recorded in 2006; I didn't watch it for more than five minutes.
Sex and the City (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) featuring [crap]. You've successfully avoided the movie, now avoid the soundtrack!
Weezer (Red Album) by Weezer. Another self-titled album by Weezer and it's uber-nerd leader Rivers Cuomo.

Fiction: Girl Books, Shatner!, and a Bunch of Malarkey
Fiction
Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich. You know the drill.
All We Know of Heaven by Jacquelyn Mitchard. Novel based on the two best friends who got in a car wreck and the survivor and deceased were misidentified in the aftermath.
This is a Young Adult novel but Mitchard is local (sort-of), popular, and was kind enough to answer my e-mails concerning coffee joints in the greater Madison area.
No Choice but Seduction by Johanna Lindsey. "A Malory Novel." Some romance. Lindsey lives in Maine. I don't know if she drinks coffee. She isn't giving a toothy smile on the back cover so maybe she drinks too much coffee.
Large Print
Twenty Wishes by Debbie Macomber. Look it up yourself: Debbie Macomber.
NonFiction
Up Till Now: the autobiography by William Shatner and David Fisher. Canadian.
Stolen Innocence: my story of growing up in a polygamous sect, becoming a teenage bride, and breaking free of Warren Jeffs by Elissa Wall and Lisa Pulitzer.
Easy Company Soldier: the legendary battles of a Sergeant from World War II's 'Band of Brothers' by Sgt. Don Malarkey and Bob Welch.

I Shall Not Want by Julia Spencer Fleming. "Millers Kill reaches the boiling point in this white-hot novel of love and suspense."
Collateral Damage by Fern Michaels. Another Sisterhood novel about gals whow ork together fighting crime or something.

DVD: Luiz Guzman, Obi-Won Kenobi, Steroids, "That's the spirit!", Rock N' Roll Baghdad City
DVD
Heavy Metal in Baghdad featuring Acrassicauda. Heavy metal is not popular in Muslim countries. Rock band Acrassicauda had a tough time under Hussein's reign and things are no better now, but the band rocks on.
Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos. There are umpteen different versions of this picture with diferent versions touting extras, and re-cuts and director versions, and so forth. This is a two-disc version entitled The Final Cut with a documentary, outtakes and interviews on the second disc.
Cassandra's Dream starring Obi-Won Kenobi, Colin Farrell, Tom Wilkinson. Brit brothers have deep gambling debts when their wealthy uncle from America pays a visit and offers them a way out. Too bad the uncle is a mobster because his offer is violent work.
Rambo starring Sylvester Stallone, others. Rambo assists missionaries traveling to Burma and trouble ensues.
Would the ticket sales have been different if this was released more recently? There were complaints from the Burmese rulers after this came out and Stallone responded saying the Burmese leaders are thugs. Considering the recent craziness I guess Stallone was right. I read that Stallone's slurred voice is the result of damaged nerves during a difficult birth.
Cleaner starring Luis Guzman, Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson play a former policeman who now works as a crime scene cleaner who sanitizes the bio hazards of blood and bone. He is called in to clean a murder site and finds out he may have been called in early to unwittingly help in a cover-up.

Fiction

Lost City by Henry Shukman. Grieving and recently discharged from the British Army Jackson travels to the Peruvian jungle to search for a vanished Peruvian capital city.

I sat in the tall lookout chair in the back of the saloon with the shotgun in my lap for two peaceful nights. On my third night it was different. I could almost smell trouble beginning to cook."
Eight gauge? Does he have a tripod to aim and fire the thing?
Plague Ship by Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul. Ship sinks and guys look for it.

DVD: Zombies and System Leftovers
DVD
Diary of the Dead starring [people I never heard of]. College film students simultaneously fight and film the zombie takeover. Zombies; a never topic of fascination and lame jokes by gun nerds.
Number 23 starring Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen. Walter reads a beat-up novel whose protagonist mirrors Walter.
Zodiac starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. Newsmen follow the Zodiac killer. Also starring Mark Ruffalo and Chloe Sevigny. I once heard Ruffalo referred to as a "mangina" due to all the chick movies who has acted in.
Evan Almighty starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman. Congressman Evan Baxter gets told by God to build an Ark.
Premonition starring Sandra Bullock. Linda Hanson has a frighteningly real premonition of her husband's car wreck death and tries to stop it from happening. Some sort of thriller.

Overdubbed, More Depression, Audio, Koontz
Music CD
Overdubbed by Dub Syndicate. I was listening to ABC Radio online for the first time in a while and a show played one of the songs, Hard & Tuff, from this album. I liked the song and figured I'd try a disc like this out.
I was listening to ABC a few months ago and they played a speech given by a Nobel Prize chemist. The chemist was a great speaker and, among other things, talked about growing up in Minnesota and attending Augsburg College. Since he was was such a compelling speaker I emailed him a note expressing my condolences for his having to attend Augsburg. Go Gusties!
AudioBook on CD
No Way to Treat a First Lady by Christopher Buckley. A comic novel. The First Lady kills her philandering husband by throwing a Paul Revere's spittoon at him. She goes on trial for assassination and her former law school boyfriend comes to her defense.
If acquitted would she still get Secret Service protection?
Fiction
Odd Hours by Dean Koontz. Odd Thomas's travels to a small, coastal California town. Odd talks to more dead people and "sinister authority" looks to exploit that ability.
NonFiction DVD
Men Get Depression. "These videos present the stories of ten brave men who overcame the stigma to tell about their experiences with depression."

Six Fiction and an True Crime AudioBook
Fiction
Front by Patricia Cornwell. Massachusetts state investigator Win Garano to find a dramatic case for his boss. Looks like his boss is out to keep the local cops dependent on her. "In the days that follow, he'll find that Lamont's task, and the places it leads him, will resemble a house of mirrors."

Comic novel of Johnny who spends the eight years of the Revolutionary War in Manhattan playing both sides against each other.
Executive Privilege by Philip Margolin. Lowly DC private eye Dana is hired to follow a college student. When the student shows up dead after a secret meeting with President Farrington Dana is on the run. Triumph of Caesar by Steven Saylor [no relation]. Caesar's wife Calpurnia hires Gordianus the Finder to investigate her suspicions of a conspiracy against her husband.
I have yet to read Saylor's last novel Roma. He does good work. Interesting fact: Saylor used to write gay porn as Aaron Travis. Another interesting fact: Saylor is much older than I thought, he is 52. Yet another fact: Saylor is an ancient history nerd.

Killer Nurses, Getaway Drivers, Global Thriller, and a Lout
DVD
Sick Nurses starring [a bunch of Thais]. Seven nurses and a doctor have been selling patients' body part. One nurse threatens to go to the police and the others kill her. Seven days later she returns to haunt them.
In Arizona one of myLibrary Pages was named Pinintorn. Pinintorn was a lovely gal and really smart. It was not until a couple weeks before she left for college in Tucson that she mentioned she had been in the country for only three years or so. I was incredulous. Her English is perfect. Geeze she was smart.
Fiction
Cold Spot by Tom Piccirilli. Raised to be a getaway driver by his violent, con-man grandfather Chase meets a lady cop and goes straight. When he has to go back into the crime life he has to ask his repulsive grandfather for help.
AudioBooks
Whole Truth by David Baldacci. A defense contractor, a government troubleshooter, and a journalist cross paths "as a series of events is set in motion that could change the world as we know it."
Prince of Frogtown by Rick Bragg. Rick Bragg learns that "a man who chases a woman with a child is like a dog who chases a car and wins. He discovers that he is unsuited to fatherhood, unsuited to fathering this boy in particular, a boy who does not know how to throw a punch and doesn't need to; a boy unaccustomed to love and affection rather than violence and neglect' in short, a boy wholly unlike the child Rick once was."

Anne Murray Lives! plus some rap.
Music CDs
Duets: friends and legends by Anne Murray. Murray sings duets with other women. I'm not sure how many of these tunes were recently recorded. Heck Dusty Springfield has been dead for years. At least five singing partners are Canadian. There might be other Canadians hidden in the 17 tunes on this disc but I'm not going to look up all the biographies.
Speaking of Dusty there are two albums available through the catalog Dusty in Memphis and The Very Best of Dusty Springfield. We have Shelby Lynne's CD of Dusty Springfield covers, Just a Little Lovin'.
Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace by Big and Rich. What's the deal with these guys?
Good Time by Alan Jackson. This guy's CDs always check out.
The Wolf by Shooter Jennings. The son of Waylon Jennings. Judging from the band photo Shooter is trying real hard to be "outlaw country". He has a radio show on Sirius radio.
Elephant in the Room by Fat Joe. Rapper guy with diamond encrusted watch.
Ego Trippin by Snoop Dogg. I don't listen to rap but Snoop scowls very well so he must be good.
Best of Both Worlds Concert by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. CD and DVD. Ugh.

I Don't Believe in Atheists by Chris Hedges. "Critiques the radical mindset that rages against religion and faith...identifies the pillars of the new atheist belief system, revealing that the stringent rules and rigid traditions in place are as strict as those of any religious practice." A response to God is Not Great and similar books.
Right of the Dial: the rise of Clear Channel and the fall of commercial radio by Alec Foege. Clear Channel used to be the fourth biggest media company in the U.S. before it sold off radio and television stations. "Foege takes stock of the company's successes and abuses, showing the ways in which Clear Channel reshaped America's cultural and corporate landscape along the way."
Beautiful Boy: a father's journey through his son's meth addiction by David Sheff. Sheff's oldest son went from good kid to lying, stealing junkie. Sheff's concern for his son's trouble turns to an addiction of it's own. I think he was on morning television the other day.
God's Middle Finger: into the lawless heart of the Sierra Madre by Richard Grant. Travel writer from Tucson heads South into the still lawless Sierra Madre run by drug lords.
Son of Stitch 'N Bitch: 45 projects to knit & crochet for men by Debbie Stoller.
The Hard Truth About Soft Skills: workplace lessons smart people wish they'd learn sooner by Peggy Klaus. Shortcomings in social, communication, and self-management behaviors hinder your advancement more often than any technical deficiencies.
Storming Las Vegas: how a Cuban-born, Soviet-trained commando took down the Strip to the tune of five world-class hotels, three armored cars, and millions of dollars by John Huddy. The subtitle pretty much says it all.
The Road to Wealth: a comprehensive guide to your money by Suze Orman. Revised and updated.
Unlocked: a journey from prison to Proust by Louis Ferrante. Mob connected Ferrante goes to prison and finds sanctuary in books.

Six DVDs
DVD
Atonement starring Keira Knightley. Girl sees sister and guy kissing and "her jealousy drives her to tell a lie that will irrevocably change the course of all their lives forever." I haven't seen it or read the book.
August Rush starring Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell. Stupid concept with young lovers, an evil father, a child secretly sent to an orphanage, child playing guitar to find unknown parents.
Sweeney Todd starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen. I should do a comparison between American and British actors and see which side has the most actors using three names. Guy is released from prison and cuts lots of throats. I've read that there is a lot of splurting blood.
Kite Runner starring [a bunch of Afghanis you never heard of]. I've never read the book. The friendship of two boys is split and years later one tries for redemption. Or something. I always thought this was about kite fighting.
Juno starring Ellen Page, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman. Wiseacre teen girl gets pregnant and picks out adopting couple. Scripted by Diablo Cody whose autobiography about being a stripper, Candy Girl, we have. Garner and Bateman were both in The Kingdom which I watched yesterday evening. That picture was a disappointment.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei. That's a point for the U.S. Two brothers plot to rob their parents' jewelry store and things go badly. Tomei has a nude scene with Hoffman.

2 CD, 2 DVD, 4 Fic., 6 NonFic, No Bill Crider
CDs
High School Musical Two. Okay, this isn't really new. It was on the processing shelf after getting a replacement case.
Now That's What I Call Music Volume 20 by various artists. Nuts. This is an older one that needed a new case too. We did get some new CDs in yesterday, they are awaiting processing.
DVD
Disney Rarities: celebrated shorts 1920s - 1960s. I bought this for the 1956 cartoon, In the Bag, where the Jellystone Park bears are assigned to pick up garbage.
Man with the Golden Arm and Suddenly starring Frank Sinatra. Two films on one disc. Suddenly is a presidential assassination movie that, according to the case, was delayed or pulled from distribution after the Kennedy assassination. I've heard the same thing about The Manchurian Candidate which also stars Sinatra.
Fiction
Price of Blood by Declan Hughes. Third in a mystery series set in Ireland and featuring the word "blood" in the title. I read the first novel Wrong Kind of Blood and it was okay, but did not enjoy it enough to try the second book, Color of Blood.
Hold Tight by Harlan Coben. Big name author dude.
Bathtub Admirals by Jeff Huber. Former Navy pilot Huber writes a scathingly satiric novel of life in the modern U.S. Navy.
Deep Dish by Mary Kay Andrews. Some food based novel judging by the cover and title.
NonFiction
Ten-Cent Plague: the great comic-book scare and how it changed America by David Hajdu. After WW2 and before television comic books were hugely popular with "garish, shameless, and often shocking content." The resulting backlash by parents, teachers, and all the usual complainers ruined all the fun.
The Physics of NASCAR: how to make steel + gas + rubber = speed by Diandra Leslie-Pelecky. Leslie-Pelecky teaches physics at UT-Dallas. But, strangely, she seems to retain a research group at Nebraska-Lincoln and is not listed on the faculty directory for UT's Physics Department.
Bill Mauldin: a life up front by Todd DePastino. A biography of the great Bill Maudlin. A Pulitzer Prize winner during WW2 at age 22 Mauldin continued as an editorial cartoonist and won a second Pulitzer several years later. A diminutive but determined dude.
In Nixon's Web: a year in the crosshairs of Watergate by L. Patrick Gray III, former Acting Director of the FBI. Nixon considered him a threat and threw him to the wolves (the press). Details his relationship with Mark Felt (Deep Throat).
Trigger Men: Shadow Team, Spider-Man, the Magnificent Bastards, and the American combat sniper by Hans Halberstad. Why not? We own all the other sniper books in the world. See HOGs in the Shadows, Illustrated Manual of Sniper Skills, Stalkers and Shooters, Shooter.
Why Mars and Venus Collide: improving relationships by understanding how men and women cope differently with stress by John Gray, Ph.D. Because people want to read it.
No Bill Crider
This is a test of my theory that Crider has a blog or google alert and checks out all the links he is sent. Crider did post an online mention of Ten-Cent Plague and someone did check out two of his books today so I'm not totally off the mark.

Large Print Rural Life in Iran
DVD
Reservation Road starring Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connelly, Mira Sorvino. Car crash leaves a boy dead and parents seeking revenge. I think. The back of the case doesn't say anything about the plot but this is what I recall from when I ordered it.
Day Break starring [Iranians]. Mansour is in an Iranian prison awaiting judgement by the family of the man he killed. The family never shows up for any of his sentencing dates and he is left to wonder if he will be forgiven or condemned.
Pain of depression: a journey through darkness. "Real people. Real stories. Real Triumphs." You can slowly die or decide to seek treatment and get better.
Music CD
Now That's What I call Music Volume 27. "20 chart-topping hits!" Top forty pop tunes.
Fiction
Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith. Precious Ramotswe solves more crimes in Africa. Mme. Ramotswe must find the family of a woman who does not her own name and a snake-oil salesman who says he can cure the daughter of Matekoni, owner of Speedy Motors.
Large Print
Where are You Now? by Mary Higgins Clark. Same book as the regular print I listed before.
Guilty by Karen Robards. Why do books by women authors so often feature leggy gals in high heels? That motif is starting to get dated.
NonFiction
Future of Farming and Rural Life in Wisconsin: findings, recommendations, steps to a healthy future by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters.
