Poorly Processed Paperback and a Large Print

NonFiction

Best Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Answered Interview Questions by Matthew J. and Nanette F. DeLuca. I listed this before but sent it back to the Pages to have it covered. The Page needs more practice with the adhesive covers for paperbacks. I'm going to have him practice on some donations or withdrawn items.

Everyday Easy 30-Minute Dinners edited by Margaret Parrish. This is a DK book so even if the recipes are lousy the pictures will trick you.

Preserve It! by edited by Lynda Brown. I bought some canning and preserving books not too long ago and they have been circ'ing. So, I bought this one.
This, too, is a DK book. My favorite DK books are the motorcycle, gun, and sports car ones. I used to obsessively study DK's various motorcycle encyclopedias and guides. I still think of Hugo Wilson as a demi-god of motorcycling.

Large Print

Running Scared by Lisa Jackson.

Overton Window by Glenn Beck.

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares.

Finding Perfect by Susan Mallery. A Fool's Gold Trilogy novel.

Ice Cold by Tess Gerritsen.

Michael Caine, French Spies, Double Order, Comic Books

DVD

The Square starring [actors]. Wife and her boyfriend plot to steal from her husband. "A stroke of twisted genius!" says the back cover.

Harry Brown starring Michael Caine and lessers. Old guy takes revenge on druggies who killed his best pal.

Fiction

Vermilion Drift by William Kent Kruger. Vermilion is spelled with one "l"? I did not know that.

Portobello by Ruth Rendell. We have two copies of this. Not because Rendell is incredibly popular here but because I accidentally ordered two copies.

Immanuel's Veins by Ted Dekker. Immanuel has just one "n"? I did not know that.

The Thorn by Beverly Lewis. Another Lewis novel with a good looking gal on the cover dressed in black and wearing a head cover.

NonFiction

Marvel Encyclopedia: the definitive guide to the characters of the Marvel Universe: updated and expanded by Alastair Dougall, senior Editor. I looked up Deadpool because Victor Gischler has written some of the stories. I'm still not sure what the deal is with that character. Or any of the characters. I mean, c'mon, there is a guy named Plantman (page 257) who apparently lives in a submarine in the Atlantic.

Simple and Delicious Cookbook by Taste of Home Magazine. The Taste of Home cookbooks are usually popular here.

Ultimate Landlord Handbook by William A Lederer. A couple other books on this topic were out of date.

No Crider or Lee Goldberg or Victor Gischler

No Victor Gischler

Where the heck is our copy of The Deputy? How has that not been cataloged yet?

Fiction

Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich. Is this one of her romances? It's a hardcover. You know Evanovich is a big time author because her photo completely covers the back cover.

Warlord by Ted Bell. Spy works to foil assassination plot against the British royal family. A popular espionage and action series.

My Lost Daughter by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. I really dislike the cover art on this one. Lily is a workaholic judge in Ventura County, California. Her daughter has a nervous breakdown at law school and Lily is split between overseeing a murder trial and caring for her institutionalized daughter. Turns the institution is poorly run, drugging the daughter without cause, and has a sociopath running the criminal organization within the hospital.

And Thereby Hangs a Tale by Jeffrey Archer. Former convict writes another novel. Seriously. Archer went to prison for perjury and perverting the curse of justice. Archer tells good stories though.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. Sparks sells lots of books that are then made into motion pictures.

Speaking of Motion Pictures

Lee Goldberg is filming a short flick in Kentucky. Instead of writing novels. No cars involved unlike this one we already own,

Music on CD

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire. Music by band from Montreal. Don't let your irrational dislike of Canadians color your judgment of this one either.

Tin Can Trust by Los Lobos. What a great band. Here is a fantastic older tune (with poor quality sound).

No Bill Crider

He's probably guarding his lawn.

Musical Interlude

Musical Interlude

An older tune. I like the guitars. Don't let your irrational dislike of Canadians color your experience.

Autism Audio with the Spider Cobra

Audio Book on CD

The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow. 8 CDs at 9 hours. Bait shack owner Frank is a former surf-bum and respected man in San Diego. He's also a former paid killer for the West Coast mob. A current mob boss demands Frankie's services.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Audio version of the popular YA novel.

Large Print

The Cobra by Frederick Forsyth. Remember that awful Stallone movie? No the other one. No, the one entitled Cobra. Yeah, that one.

Spider Bones by Kathy Reichs. I always wanted to enjoy and read these books ever since I first read they were partly set in Montreal (see my previous blather). I tried reading the first in the series, Deja Dead, but I read something that made me shut the book and never return.

NonFiction

Islands of Genius: the bountiful mind of the autistic, acquired, and sudden savant by Darold A. Treffert. There are a number of autistic kids in the Lake Mills area. Or, at least all the families that do have autistic kids use the library and check out books on the topic. This book covers the phenomena of savants and the different people it effects, including some autistics.

Vikings! Parker! Kostoff! Horses! Swings! Locksley!

Adult Fiction

Slayground by Richard Stark. Do I need to spell out my excitement over these reprints by The Univ. of Chicago press of the older Parker novels by Richard Stark. Parker, the consummate thief, is stuck in a "shuttered amusement park" after a heist goes wrong. A heist going wrong? In a Parker novel? Outrageous!

Late Rain by Lynn Kostoff. Local soft drink mogul is murdered by his son's wife. Alzheimer's patient witnesses the murder and a recent transplant to South Carolina investigates. This novel has two good things to recommend it. 1) The book was praised by Charlie Stella. 2) Tyrus Books published it.

White Raven by Robert Low. Viking ship crew, the Oathsworn, set out to rescue two members taken as hostages. I read the first book in the series, Whale Road, and and also ordered the second one. I ordered this when I saw the other two in order on the shelf. Order.

Large Print

Cure by Robin Cook. Medical mystery.

1022 Evergreen Place by Debbie Macomber. A swing is on the cover behind a picket fence.

Crossfire by Dick Francis. Something to do with horses.

Locksley

I mentioned before that Little Steven likes Locksley and plays him frequently on the Underground Garage. I'm listening to a radio show excerpt from a Madison station and the guys from the band are a boring interview. But, they speak about playing with Ray Davies.

One Audio Book, a Daniel Woodrell Reprint, Earthquakes

Fiction

Tomato Red by Daniel Woodrell. Another down and out in the Ozarks novel by Woodrell.
I'm assuming Woodrell's books are getting reprinted because of the recent movie made off his novel.

This has a foreword by Megan Abbott. I only mention Abbott's foreword to see how long it takes for Abbott's mother to google her way over here.

EDIT: Took her 6 hours 57 minutes.

Audio Book on CD

Hard Candy by Andrew Vachss. 6 CDs at 7 hours 24 minutes. Private eye and tough guy Burke is after an evangelist who is mistreating runaways.

Earthquakes

Hey, Dunedin Are you getting earthquake damage? I assume not since you are quite a ways south of Christchurch.

Six New DVDs

DVDs

Date Night starring Steve Carell and Tina Faye. Married couple encounter humorous predicaments when out on the town. With gratuitous pistol illustration on the front cover and gratuitous use of Mila Kunis on the back cover.

The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Biopic of the rock band. Supposed to be a good picture.

The Dollyrots are signed to Joan Jett's record label,Blackheart Records. We have their new CD but it is not on the shelf yet. They were scheduled to play in Milwaukee on September 7th but the show is listed as cancelled on the venue's website. Here is an old song.

Bounty Hunter starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Bounty hunter gets job to go after his bail-skipping ex-wife. Gratuitous photoshopping of Aniston's waistline on front cover, gratuitous shotgun posing on back cover.

The Ghost Writer starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan. Writer assists former political leader in writing his memoirs. Bill Crider mentioned this one but I do not recall if he liked the flick. Ever see that Brosnan movie where he is a Russian spy order to do a terrorist attack?

Last Song starring Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear. Teen romance? Teen tragedy? Father and daughter reconnect at seashore? Hard to tell from the front cover which is surprisingly free of gratuitous Miley Cyrus images.

Prophet starring [French people]. Teenager goes to prison and falls into league with a Corsican gang. Teenager forced to do several dangerous jobs all while keep his own plans secret. Supposed to be a great crime picture. Crider status unknown.

Three AudioBooks on CD

AudioBooks on CD

Picasso Flop by Vince Van Patten and Robert J. Randisi. 5 CDs at 6.5 hours. Professional poker player Jimmy goes to prison and his wealthy cellmate strikes a deal to pay Jimmy to teach poker to the cell-mate's kid. Jimmy gets out of prison and things are working great with his acolyte when a competing player is murdered and the acolyte is under suspicion.

Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison. 15 CDs at 19 hours. Books with vampire/witch/bounty hunter/sex/werewolf/fairy characters still check out well. The audiobooks check out well, too. This should check-out well. Do you think this will check-out well? Why will this check-out well? Check-out well, check-out well, check-out well, check-out well.

Brutal Telling by Louise Penny. 11 CDs at 13 hours. Quebec's Chief Inspector Gamache returns to Three Pines, Quebec to investigate another murder. I read the first book in this series and then never got back to the sequels.

My Trip to Quebec by Gerard the Reminiscing. I went to Quebec on my honeymoon. I brought my wife along. I really enjoyed Montreal. The Botanical Gardens was really, really impressive. We had dinner at a nice place, ate smoked meat, had coffee, took the subway, visited Mount Royal Park. After the trip I would tell people, only half-jokingly, that we were going to move there. I used to go online looking at real estate ads and job openings, reading novels, and watching movies.

Angelina by Andrew Morton. Unauthorized biography of Angelina Jolie.

Make Believe Stories

Fiction

Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie. Lady takes care of ex-husband's delinquent cousins.

Spider Bones by Kathy Reichs. Doctor picks over the bones of the dead.

Bearers of the Black Staff by Terry Brooks. Let me guess: guy with black staff hits whacks forces of evil across the head.

Three Fiction

Fiction

Fragile by Lisa Unger. Don't know.

Books Made From Paper

Crossfire by Dick Francis and Felix Francis. I assume Dick Francis was fully involved in this one and probably finished before he died.

Three Stations by Martin Cruz Smith. An Arkady Renko novel. Let me make a guess. Arkady has to deal with 1) Murder 2) Politics 3) Personal turmoil in his love life 4) Vodka swilling drunks 5) Corruption. I have enjoyed all the Renko novels but the last one, Stalin's Ghost, was a so-so effort.

Large Print
